Thai & Chinese cooking use a great deal of peanut oil, and the woks are

usually not washed in a dish washer (which uses near-boiling water) but

rather are wiped clean. If you have any concerns about peanuts, Thai &

Chinese are not the best way to go.

Oh, and an authentic Mexican restaurant may use lard in things like the

refried beans.

Anna finally tests negative for peanut allergy at 5)

Thanks for the warning on peanut oil and lard. We do almost all our

cooking at home so I really don't have to worry about any ingredients we

don't want! :-) When we do eat out, we eat at restaurants where they know

us and our dietary needs. We are very lucky. Everywhere we have lived we

find restaurants and get to know the owners/wait staff/cooks. In our

present location the local Indian restaurant makes several special plates

for us without any meat or dairy. We order the buffet and we can find or

or two vegan things on the buffet and whatever is not vegan they make

special for us at no extra charge! Pretty cool. I find 'ethnic' and

locally owned restaurants will almost bend over backwards for us. We never

go to chain restaurants because you really don't know what you'll get and

the waitstaff usually doesn't know what is in the food. We've been vegan

for years and we've always been very 'careful' when eating out and now that

we have an 11 month old to nuture we enjoy cooking at home much more.

On this same topic. Someone mentioned Amy's prepared foods. Just a note

to vegans out there and parents with small children, a lot of her foods

have honey. I've read honey can be deadly to infants. We never eat honey

so I don't worry about it, but I was surprised how many parents didn't

realize honey was a danger.

Take care,

Linda
