It's because of the botulism spores, which adults and older children can deal with, but infants cannot. The spores do not survive cooking or baking. This doesn't deal with the vegan issue, of course. I never used a fridge at work, just a lunchbox with an icepack, and never had any trouble. I brought sandwiches (hummus, cream cheese, veggie lunchmeats, peanut butter, etc.), little packages of yoghurt, sometimes a container with dinner leftovers. If you can boil a kettle, you can make one of those little soups-in-a-cup, or those little bags of oatmeal. The possibilities are endless ...
