Hi all- I have a 5yo son who has recently started to snore

incredibly. As of Jan 1st we started no sugar and over the course of

1 1/2 months have pretty much gone vegan. Does anyone know of any

possible corrolation between the two?

I removed a 5ft stuffed alligator and new down bedding that he

received at Christmas tonight thinking maybe he is allergic to

something. Also, before he went to bed, I looked in his mouth and

(pardon my lack of knowledge) on both sides of his pointy thing that

hangs down in his mouth it is VERY swollen and I think there may be

white short lines on them. I am so not a doctor.

I am very concerned about this as his snoring actually stops him from

breathing for about 5-7 seconds about twice a minute. If he sleeps

on his tummy, it gets a little better. HELP!!!

PS Sorry if you get this same post on another board, but I need all

the help I can get. Michelle

I've never heard of a connection between a vegan diet and sleep apnea or

snoring. It could be that the timing of the two is coincidental. Have

you added anything new to his diet to replace what your family has stopped

eating? Maybe he is sensitive to that. The swollen tonsils (I think

that's what you were describing) suggest he may have either a low level

infection or an allergy to something in his environment. In any case, I

would suggest taking him to a pediatrician to get checked out.

Is he running a fever? White lines in the throat is sometimes strep throat.

Be careful! Talk to whoever takes care of your health needs. ESPECIALLY if

he has a temp. My oldest son had it as a baby and he ended up with a

hospital stay. They usually don't want to take fluids or eat solids when

they have strep.

Good Luck and Many Blessings!

Inability to breathe during sleep is a condition known as Sleep Apnea. It is

a serious condition of which not much is known what is the primary cause. If

the air breathing passage is blocked mechanically, the air does not reach

the lung very well, and causes breathing problem.

One of the things that can be done is with a help of ENT speciality,

determine that the nasal passage (nose bone called septum) is straight and

not blocking the passage. if that is the first culprit, get rid of nasal

septum deviation.

the other likely culprit is the throat - what you probably saw was 'TONSIL'

which can be swollen due to infection or allergies. The pointy thing you

call is 'UVULA'. People usually get it surgically removed to ease the

passage. ENT (EAR,NOSE,THROAT) specialist should be able to help.

Eliminate allergies and any weight problem. Develop a habit of brisk walks

and/or jogging, too.

Take care

Sorry I'm answering such an old message. I haven't checked my mail in almost

2 months since I'm on the road in Spain (with my husband and 9-month-old).

I just wanted to add my two cents about snoring and going vegan.. when I met

my now husband I snored horribly, but I immediately went vegan since he was,

and within a month or so I stopped snoring and haven't since (2 years now).

He thinks it's the dairy that caused it for me.

ps. if anyone is planning travel around southern europe or israel and needs

advice or listings of vegetarian/vegan restaurants and natural food stores,

email me, finding these places seems to be becoming a hobby.

Hi

Your description of your son's throat sounds like an infection, I would

consult a pediatrician if you haven't already.

I have two adult friends who have suffered from sleep apnea in their

adult years. Both were very overweight and used a device during sleep to

restart their breathing during momentary lapses. One has found relief as

a result of surgery and diet for weight loss. The other still has the

condition. Neither of them are vegans or vegetarians.

Hope your son is doing better.
