Hi! I've been reading posts for a little over 2 weeks now and have quite a few questions.

We just recently switched to a vegetarian diet for many reasons so its still an adjustment time for us. My son is 10 months old and allergic to dairy. I know a vegan diet can be healthy for a baby but I'm kind of at a loss on how to proceed. Also I need info on quick and easy meals for him and me that are portable.

Thanks in advance for any help you have.

Hi Tanya,

Many, many babies are allergic to dairy, and only develop a resistance to it later, after a couple of years. My 12 year old was allergic until she was about 2 and my 3 year old has never had milk ("cows milk"), just soy and rice milks, and a little cheese (I mix dairy cheese with soy and rice cheese). Even if you can't heat your meals where you're going, any leftovers are good, you can put them in a pita pocket or wrap. Rice in a sandwich only sounds funny, it tastes great with the veggies and salad dressing! Cooked, seasoned red lentils, mashed, makes a good sandwich spread. Tofu is great in a sandwich. Peanut butter and banana (on banana bread!) or apple is really good. If you have hot water where you're going, instant oatmeal is good, especially in a New Hampshire winter.

Hi Tanya! My family is vegan, including my 20 month old son. You are right that a vegan diet is healthy for a baby-- it's the best!! At your son's age, he is probably still eating mushy stuff or small, soft finger foods, right? (I'm starting to forget!) Cut up fruit and or small pieces of soft bread or dried fruit are easily portable. There are also whole grain crackers, O cereals (Oatios are the best-- organic, whole grain, and no sugar--they taste the best too, trust me, we've tried them all!) or teething biscuits at the health food store (where you are sure to find many more vegan options than at the grocery store!).

You can also try the cups of soy yogurt, if you're ready to introduce soy. They are very convenient, but can be high in sugar. Some kids like the plain ones, or you can buy the plain (it comes in large containers, too) and mix in your own (org.) all-fruit jelly or mushed up fruit to flavor it without so much sugar.

My son really likes soymilk, if you're ready for that, and don't forget you can substitute it for cow's milk in baking, cooking, and cereal.

Apple sauce is easy to tote around in a tight-fitting container, organic and unsweetened is the best!

Another fun idea is organic frozen veggies lke corn, peas, and carrots. If you want to take them somewhere, just dump them in a container and they'll defrost by the time you want to eat them. They make a good snack because they are small and they are actually pretty sweet. Another good idea is to give them as a frozen snack for teething or in the summer months (you be the judge on whether or not your baby is ready for this chew/choke-wise). Frozen blueberries are great for this too, although usually bigger and definitely messier. :-)

A great book for nutrition info is "Pregnancy, Children, and the Vegan Diet," by Dr. Michael Klaper. It had tons of great nutritional info and recipes. Also check out his other book, "Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple." You can also check out his expert info/advice column at http://www.vegfamily.com

This is a great site with tons of resources for vegan families!!!! Check it out!

Hope this helps!

You are doing the best thing for your family!

Thanks to everyone who responded -- I guess I do use a lot of those

suggestions (esp soy yogurt as Andrew LOVES yogurt and applesauce

too.)

Anyway, I have a new question. I just found out I'm expecting baby

#2 -- very early stages. I will get the Vegan Pregnancy book (I

can't remember the title but I did see it at our local health food

store.) Anyway, does anyone have any practical suggestions for me?

I want to be informed when I go to the doc/midwife.

Hi Lisa,

My husband is a carnivore also. He is totally supportive of me and eats

most the vegan dishes I make. He has a strong dislike of some food items.

He won't eat most fresh fruits. He hates squash of all kinds.

He understands the harm in eating animal products but doesn't have a strong

enough desire to give it up....even though, his triglyceride levels are out

of site and he has a strong family history of Type II diabetes.

What can you do?? Guess, just be good examples and love them.

he hadn't... ;-)

Why not, if you don't mind me asking? And for me, it wasn't me really

telling him, it just evolved more out of mutual respect...plus, I do the

cooking ;-)

That is how it is here. Well, in the beginning, I told him that there was no way that I could ever marry a meat eater, the thought repulsed me to no end, so he gave vegetarianism a try. I am vegan and he tried to be vegan too out of respect, I told him that he didn't have to go that far, so now he is lacto ovo.
