Guest guest
Friends: I've been following the discussion regarding families in which not all members are vegetarian. My family is in that situation. Actually, the only vegetarian member at this point is my 13 year old daughter. My husband and I are very supportive of her and the decision which she made about 3 years ago. I strive to make a couple vegetarian dinners per week. I'll admit though that the greatest deterrent to this has to do with being a busy, working Mom, who was raised to cook meats. It's taking lots of time to re-learn how to cook in new ways, and with new foods. I'm trying though and I think our daughter is appreciative of that fact. I've also pointed out to her that she is old enough to cook. She can make us dinner occasionally, too. I'm pretty sure that my husband and youngest daughter will remain meat eaters. The only thing I'd have trouble giving up at this point is fish - just because I like it. Thanks for your lively discussion. Please know that there are meat eaters out there who have tremendous respect for those who have chosen the vegetarian lifestyle. I personally don't understand why anyone would pick on a vegetarian for their lifestyle choice. I know it happens though. When people border on picking on my daughter, her Dad & I are the first to defend her. Heck, I'm proud of her. Sue stargazer
Guest guest
Sue, You sound like a great mom! My mom had a hard time cooking for me when I started on my vegetarian path about 16 years ago at the age of 13. I was out of the house when I went vegan, but she still cooked vegan when I came for visits. She always respected my choice, but it was frustrating for her to cook. Well, several great vegan cookbooks and years later my mom is an awesome vegan cook. I asked her and my dad to go veg for three months as a birthday present to me and that did it. They aren't vegetarian, but she cooks almost all veg at home. She doesn't even have to look at the recipes now. I tease her that she should start a vegan catering business. So...there is light at the end of the tunnel. Someday cooking veg will be second nature and who knows you might even enjoy it! Thanks for being such a respectful person. We need more people like you in the world. Linda
Guest guest
My son is nine and has been a vegetarian for just about a year now. My husband and I are not (though I find myself eating less and less meat). We have been supportive and are proud of him also. Isn't it great to have children who can think for themselves. I hope this means that they will be able to make better choices as teenagers and will not fall to peer pressure as easily as others.
