Hi all,

We wondered if anyone's had experience with the iron deficiency problem

at the 1-year checkup.

Our pediatrician is researching options through a nutritionist (both

non-vegan-grrrrr) and the consensus seems to be that alcohol-based

" farensol " is the only really effective option.

We want to avoid alcohol-containing medications completely.

Any insights?

Also, anyone in the Rochester,NY area know of a vegan-friendly

pediatrician?

Thanks.

Hello!

I have a son who is now three that was anemic at the same time your son is.

He does not suffer from this problem now. I did a lot of research on it

because he could not tolerate the drops that the doctors prescribed. From

what I found most children become anemic sometime or other and a healthy

diet corrects the problem. I think as they are able to eat more solids it

compensates for their limited diet. Sam ate raisins and strawberries for

their iron. I think there were several others that were recommended for

their iron but I can't remember them at this point. I found some really

interesting things on the medical websites. I just disregarded what didn't

go with our lifestyle (like feeding him liver) :(

Good Luck and Many Blessings!

My son (2 in a couple of weeks) also had iron deficiency. Here in Norway

they don't routinely check for iron levels in small children. I requested

it when he was 1 1/2 years old because he was (and still is) living off

of pb & j sandwhiches, bananas and milk (rice, soy, cow's - if it is white

he'll drink it:-) His iron was at 9, 20 being average for children.

At his last check about a month ago, his iron was in normal range. I just

gave him the iron solution that the doctor suggested, didn't even know

enough to check it for being alcohol- based. My counselor here lived in

the US about 15 years ago, she said when her sone had iron deficiency she

gave him Floradix iron preparation - I've seen ads for it there in my

veggie magazines. It is sold here as well and if this happens again I

will give him that instead.

My 2 yo absolutely LOVES seaweed. She sneaks into the

cupboard after it (just the dry nori sheets). She

also loves dried apricots, spinach (fresh or cooked),

hummus, lentil soup. Molasses and kelp are also good

sources.

I understand that some of us may not be starting our

babies on solids until about 1 yr, so some of these

things may not be an option for you. If you're

breastfeeding, you can always boost your iron intake.

Good luck,

Sara

Sara,

someone else's child has the same love for seaweed as does mine. My son is 5

and has been eating it for years. He actually asks for it first thing in the

morning. Yes, nori sheets are his first choice and dulse as well.

They continue to eat healthy foods if you make them available.

Peace,

Laura
