Guest guest
Hi. Does anyone on the live in a what they consider to be a good place to raise vegetarian kids? The factors that I am thinking of are access to vegetarian food, organic produce etc., access to vegetarian groups (especially ones that have activities for kids and families), schools with vegetarian options, and good schools in general. I realize that vegetarianism is not the only factor when choosing to relocate. But with all other factors equal, this could influence our decision. We are mainly looking for areas close to major metropolitan areas. Guest guest
Seattle is a WONDERFUL place for vegetarians! There is organic produce in the grocery stores, there are dozens of farmers markets, and you can even get it delivered to your door from pioneer organics down by pikes place market. The schools are pretty good. There is easy access to lots of types of food and spices that may not be considered " main stream " too There are also a fair number of vegetairans here to socialize with as well as veggie restaurants. Guest guest
Amy, I live the San Jose, CA. Any area around the SF Bay area meets your criteria, though the only area that offers healthy vegetarian and vegan food in the PUBLIC schools is Berkeley (other have options such as cheese pizza, burritos, etc.). There are many other private options that are very " earth " friendly. The down side is the cost of living. It goes from high to very high. But the positive factors keep us here. What can I say? Let me know if you have more specific questions. Linda Amy wrote: > Hi. Does anyone on the live in a what they consider to be a good > place to raise vegetarian kids? Guest guest
Hi Amy, If cost is no concern, Boulder, Colorado is a great place. We have a Whole Foods Market, Vitamin Cottage, Wild Oats *and* an Alfalfa's! A new cooperative vegetarian market is expected to open within six months. There's a farmers' market with mostly organic foods every Saturday and Weds. during spring to fall. It's easy to find alternative medicine practitioners. Bike paths are everywhere, mass transit is very good. We have the Vegetarian Society of Colorado, and although there is not currently a big parent/child sub-group, there is a fledgling group starting and I expect they will grow. We have wonderful weather. Denver and/or Boulder are commonly in magazine " top ten " picks of places to live, and I agree with them. We hope to never leave this area. But as I alluded to in my first sentence, the cost of living, especially housing, is extremely high here. The median price of a house is somewhere around $230,000 in Boulder (less in Denver). Wow. I will mention my disappointment with public schools in this area, though. I was expecting a much larger ve*an population than there is (2 other kids among the 75 2nd graders at the school (in three classes of 25 kids, BTW), and none that I know of among my kindergartner's class). At private schools there is a larger vegetarian presence. One school in particular, which I love but we can't afford, offers meals through a school-oriented caterer that provides daily vegetarian meals if requested. I don't know about vegan possibilities, I'm guessing some would be vegan and some would not. (My son brown-bags his lunch and has never been teased about being vegetarian.) If you are seriously interested, contact me and we can talk more offline. Good luck in your decision! Warmly, Emily in Boulder - " Amy " <amyoilman Saturday, March 31, 2001 11:09 AM Great places to raise vegetarian kids | Hi. Guest guest
Amy, Portland is a good area. They have good natural food stores and farmers markets. There are plenty of surrounding areas for living just outside the city. I homeschool so not sure about schools. I miss Portland for the markets and thrift stores. Blessings, Debra Amy wrote: > Hi. Guest guest
Amy, I am brand new to this list and refer to myself as a " struggling vegetarian. " My 14 yo daughter is a vegetarian which really bolstered my desire to be so as well. The rest of my family stand by their meat. I live in Annapolis, MD knowing many vegetarians and vegans; we have easy access to Fresh Fields, food co-ops that order organic everything, even the Vegetarian Resource Group is in close-by Baltimore and since you mentioned being close to a metropolitan area, we are also about 45 min. from Washington DC. It seems that every other friend of mine is vegetarian which really helps me a lot! As far as the schools, that's another situation altogether...we homeschool our two younger children (our oldest is in college) so that's makes eating vegetarian much easier for my daughter. She's chosen nutrition as her " science " ... This area where we live can be so diverse...especially being closer to two main cities...if you'd like more information, don't hesitate to e-mail me privately. Guest guest
Hello, We live in Eugene Oregon and it is a good place to live being vegan or vegetarian. There are many small natural food stores, 2 Oasis stores. PC market has a good selection of organic produce and tons of natural foods. Fred Meyer also has some organic and a natural foods center. There is a small farmers market (seasonally as far as I know). There are a few vegan resturants and more vegetarian, as well as vegan/vegetarian friendly ones. I am not sure about the schools yet, my son is in preschool and everyone brings their own snack because all the kids either have special diets or allergies. Everyone is great about our raising him vegan. They even have a decription of what vegan is on the list of food allergies for all the kids, and no one thinks we are odd at all. I know when I was in high school (I am 26), there were about 8 other vegetarians that I knew of and my Parents lived in Springfield, which is sort of a suburb of Eugene and far less veg friendly. In college almost everyone I knew was vegetarian and a few were vegan. The University has a vegan cafe too. Some of the things you mentioned I am not too sure about. I know there are some vegetarian groups here but I haven't searched them out. There is a group that has a vegan potluck every month but we have yet to go, supposidly there are lots of kids there. It isn't too expensive living here and the weather is moderate. It's a little less than 2 hours from Portland (which I love), and about 4- 5 hour from Seattle. I think it is about an 8 hour drive to San Francisco too. Here are some links for Eugene: http://www.registerguard.com/ http://www.eugeneweekly.com/ My husband is from Colorado and said that Boulder and Eugene are the same town, except Boulder is about 20 minutes from Denver and has much cooler clubs. I hope this is helpful Summer , Amy <amyoilman> wrote: > Hi. Does anyone on the live in a what they consider to be a good > place to raise vegetarian kids? Guest guest
We really like Salt Lake City. While there are no food co-ops yet, we do have a few health food stores and the grocerers are doing their best to compete with this by stocking organic produce, natural health items and organic bulk foods. We have a farmers market, and there are u-pick organic orchards within reasonable driving ranges. There are vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the area, and once a month the health food store has a vegan potluck with cooking demonstrations. As for schools, our friends send their veg kids to something called the Open Classroom, which is a homeschool-type learning *at school,* where the parents co-op teaching. I think this is grades k-6. Guest guest
Chicago isn't as bad as you'd think. It all depends on the neighbourhood. We have Whole Foods (which, of course, gobbled up most of our independent whole food stores, but there are a few holdouts still). We belong to an organic farm co-op, which brings weekly boxes of vegetables to about 15 sites around the greater metropolitan area between June & November, plus there are a bunch of neighbourhood farmers' markets that operate during the same time frame. Organic fruits, vegetables, & vegetarian food in general is now more readily available at many local supermarkets like Dominick's. Most restaurants are vegetarian-friendly, and in most cases that means vegan-friendly as well. I can't speak about the schools, because my daughter isn't quite 3 yet. Her current pre-school is completely OK with it, but then, it's a Jewish school, so they restrict what children are allowed to bring and what they serve on " hot lunch day " to vegetarian food anyway, so as not to upset the kosher aspect of their tables & ovens & pans & such. Also, it's a private school. I'd agree with the poster from Boulder that private schools (probably anywhere) are going to be more amenable in that regard. It's great being able to pick a location based on your vegetarian needs alone, but if other practicalities need to factor in (like available jobs, affordable housing, world class arts & culture), then Chicago is a pretty reasonable choice. Guest guest
I do not have a response for this question, but I have a similar one. We are also looking for a great place to raise our son, but a little further away from the city. We have been researching the Pacific Northwest and northern Idaho looks pretty good. There are healthfood stores, co-ops, two naturopathic doctors, many mountains, large lakes, rivers, large amounts of public lands, theater, culture and lastly not too far from Spokane, WA. I can't seem to find if there are any like-minded parents regarding vegetarian/veganism and homeschooling. Does anyone live there or have any thoughts about that area? Thank you. Guest guest
Hi! My husband and I live in Richmond, Va. We are both vegan and we just had a baby girl 5 months ago. We have 2 natural food stores, a bunch of animal rights groups, a vegetarian society and many more veg and earth friendly places. A lot of the restaurants here have veg/vegan foods and even the big chain grocery stores have large selections of natural foods. We even have an all vegan daycare in the city. I am not saying it is the greatest place in the world, to us it seems to be pretty good. We know a few veg families with children and I know there are more around here. We also have been talking about home schooling our daughter but we don't know of any other veg families that do. Anybody have any suggestion for my husband and I about home schooling? We would like to have a veg home school play group. We want our daughter to be able to interact with veg/vegans her own age, so she doesn't think she is the only one out there. Guest guest
Well, like I said in my last post, Eugene is great. I know there are quite a few people that home school in the area, and there are groups that get together for homeschooled kids to do group activites like field trips and drama things. We thought about it but decided not to, we thought our son needed the socialization since he isn't around other kids. Then after we found out he was autistic (mildly) we were even more convinced about his going to school. He now goes to a wonderful preschool. I do know someone that is planning on homeschooling, she lives in Portland now, but is thinking of moving here. I do agree the pacific NW is a wonderful place to live, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather live. I love the climate, I love rain and wish it rained more often actually. Guest guest
Jackie, I really enjoy raising my family in San Jose, CA. It met all of Amy's requirements. It's full of veg/alt health resources and has a multicultural climate. BTW, Natural Health just did an article on the Best Places To Live earlier this year. Might be something to check out if you are planning a move. Linda Jackie Harris wrote: > I'm going through old email and noticed this one...Did the group ever > respond to this? Guest guest
Renee, Well.....the cost of living is well above the national average. However, real estate prices are actually dropping now, as are rentals. Here is a thumbnail sketch of the cost of living: Homes: 3bed2bath ~1500sq (nice centrally located SJ neighborhood)-$550,000 (buy) $2000 (rent) Gas: $1.50/gal (currently) Groceries: $1.00-tofu, $2.50-1/2 gal soymilk, $1.40-whole wheat bread, $1.48-Adams Peanut Butter Utilities (Gas & Elec): low-$29.99, high $189.00 The major draw here are the amenities. There are tons of natural food purveyors, health clubs, chiropractors, holistic care providers, etc. We even have organic farms that deliver to local drop off sites during the growing season. We have good schools, in a wide range of approaches. There are many things for kids to do. We frequent places like the Children's Discovery Museum, a hand's on play/learn/explore center, local parks and our libraries. There are lots of free music, art, and other activities, along with many cultural and art festivals. I can't think of anything to which we don't have access within a 5-45 minute drive (except snow). The downsides to this area is the cost of living, the commute/traffic congestion, and SOME people's emphasis of their material success. I enjoy living in this area. I came up here to attend school 18 yrs ago and somehow never left. I am, however, aware of the area's drawbacks. Let me know if I can answer any specific questions, point you toward other resources, or assist your husband at all. Linda .. Renee Jean wrote: > My husband is being offered a job in San Jose. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info! I am going to find out the details about the job and see if you know anything about the company. He will be there on Monday. I sure wish I could go with him, I would love to see California. Oh well. I know that when he did the cost of living calculater from where we are from in Louisiana to move to San Jose you would have to make $25K more a year. YIKES It would be REALLY nice though to be located somewhere it is conceivable to get good fresh veggies. I can't even get vanilla soy milk in the town I am in now! I have four kiddos so the idea of museums, art, and parks are really great. Thanks again for your help! Guest guest
Hi Renee, My brother moved to San Jose almost two years ago. When he negotiated his salary, he calculated the increased cost of living (mainly housing) into that, and got it. It seemed like a huge increase, but the companies there know that they have to factor that in. He has no kids, but is vegan and loves the selection of foods available and all the outdoor spaces for running, hiking, biking, etc. Good luck. Guest guest
I live in the Santa Cruz mountains, about 20 minutes from San Jose and 10 minutes from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It is a wonderful place to raise veggie kids. We take our toddler and preschooler to an organic vegetarian italian restaurant down the street often. I recommend this area! Good luck, it is pricey, but the pay is better as well.
