Guest guest
Thanks Amy for starting such a great thread. It would be wonderful if VRG or some other legitimate vegetarian organization began rating places to live based on how vegetarian/vegan-friendly they were. I live in the Washington, D.C. area. This area would probably rank below many places on the West coast. However, we do have the Vegetarian Society of the District of Columbia (VSDC), some organic (but pricey) supermarkets, and active farmers' markets in the summertime. I do not have any children in school but the area generally gets high marks for its public schools. Aside from metropolitan areas, I would imagine that many college towns are also vegetarian-friendly. I think this is a pretty good area in which to be vegetarian. Soy milk, Boca burgers, and other veggie friendly products seem to be available at almost all mainstream grocery stores these days, and Fresh Fields is a growing presence as well. Arlington also has a co-op that I belong to. There are a number of all-vegetarian restaurants and many, many ethnic restaurants with a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan foods. It's not uncommon for me to meet someone new and find out that they are vegetarian as well. I think the closer-in suburbs tend to be a bit more friendly to vegetarians than the farther-out suburbs, but even when I go out to dinner with my parents in Loudon County I can still find a good variety of vegan foods, especially at ethnic restaurants. I think Arlington in Virginia and Takoma Park in Maryland are probably the suburbs with the biggest reputations for being friendly to alternative lifestyles of all varieties, including vegetarianism. However, like 'bike n veg' I'm not sure how vegetarianism and other non-mainstream diets are dealt with in the public schools since I don't have any school-age children yet myself. ---- Patricia Bullington-McGuire <patricia The brilliant Cerebron, attacking the problem analytically, discovered three distinct kinds of dragon: the mythical, the chimerical, and the purely hypothetical. Guest guest
I'm another Washington D.C. suburb person. I live in Silver Spring specifically, just 1/2 hr. from DC and about that far from Baltimore. It's pretty veg. friendly here. we have 2 coops close by and the seventh day adventist stores due in a pinch. We have 2 vegan chinese restaurants in this county, that are only 10 mins away from each other. The ethnic restaurants in this area provide plenty of vegan options as well. Especially Ethiopian food in and around D.C.. It's worth the visit to Adams Morgan to check out the 6 or 7 different options. I can speak to the public schools in this area . My son is 5 and has been going to the public schools for 2 yrs. They are more than willing to be conscious of his diet. There are so many children with allergies and other dietary restrictions , it's not a problem. We pack our own snack and lunch each day. The teachers are actually taking an intrest in making food that is healthy animal free in the classroom. We have a local bakery that will make vegan cakes and cookies for us as well. Peace, Laura
