Guest guest
Hi all, I'm brand new to this list; I have three children, daughters 19 & 14, son 12. My 14 yo and I are the only veggies in the family which makes things pretty challenging. We just had a discussion about the use of dairy during lunch because I'd just read an article in a local magazine about Horizon running the dairy farm for the Naval Academy. (We live in Annapolis, MD) What irked me about the article was the fact they raise all this organic food for the cows...why not raise the organic food for the people! anyway, I'll keep myself from going off on a tangent. Re: homeschooling, socialization, or the " s " word in homeschooling circles, is one of the big reasons we took our two younger children OUT of public school. My son " learned " in kindergarten that he couldn't play with another boy because the other boy was Asian...It sickened me that his attitude is pervasive with some of the very young. Since my children have been out of school (five years), they have grown so much more self-confident and self-aware; because we can take the time to talk things through and that they are learning in an atmosphere of love and caring, they have learned so much more about themselves, how to communicate more effectively, that what they feel and how they learn are important and valid. I could go on but again, this is another hot topic for me...so I'll stop here :^D I'm pleased to be on this list and hope to learn more about the veggie lifestyle, how people " manage " when faced with with naysayers, etc. My own situation is that I'm trying to build up resources to pursue a diet low in gluten, high in iron and protein. I'm become severly anemic once and not surprisingly, my family wanted me to return to eating meat. My iron, when normal, tends to be on the low side, cholesterol on the high, weight a bit higher than I'd like (though I'm not obese). My daughter is thriving but I keep getting questions like is she eating dairy for her calcium...she IS but not for the calcium, because she likes milk and ice cream! It was John Robbins book that convinced me of the veggie lifestyle and I've been working at it :^) Ellen
