Guest guest
Mia, For the record, I think homeschooling is great, but when it came time to make a choice with our son, I realized that he actually resisted learning from me a lot of the time, and so we thought we thought we'd give public school a chance...he LOVES it! He has just bloomed there and is developing confidence that for whatever reason he didn't get at home (we moved a lot and did not have a stable community of friends and family around us). He now says he is glad he does not home school...BUT his best friend up the street is homeschooled (along with his 3 siblings) and is bright, creative, involved in all kinds of activities, and doing great. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet he would say he loves being homeschooled. I think either way can work, as long as the parents go about it consciously and address any problems that arise eitherway. I also feel like an oddity in our community being an afterschool-at-home-mom. Most of my son's friends are in afterschool care. So I still do have time to influence them myself in the late afternoon. Guest guest
Hello, and Happy Spring! I loved every day of school. I never wanted to miss! So much so, in fact, that I became a teacher. My life has been measured in years beginning in September since 1974!! Teachers, like parents, vary widely in terms of knowledge, passion, compassion, and enthusiasm. Rarely does any parent or teacher fully understand how great or how awful s/he is at the job. It seems impossible to decide from the outside that one can do the job better than the other. I now have a daughter in kindergarten. She, too, loves every day. Because I get out of school an hour before she does, I can pick up my younger son and then pick her up from school each day. I so enjoy talking with her after school. She is so excited to share with me each thing she learned, the activities in which she participated, and the conversations she had. I use that time to reinforce, debrief, and clarify, as necessary. I also have my summers free to parent-educate, and I love that as well. I seriously considered homeschooling, and I studied the various points of view on this subject for months. While I can clearly see the benefits, I did not feel this was the best choice for my family. I support the decisions of any family who explores all options and matches the family to the appropriate choice. If feminism gave any gift to our society, it should be that we (men and women) are empowered to make our own thoughtful decisions without facing judgement from those who have chosen differently. We do not have to attack to defend. The wisdom of our choices will be reflected in the happiness of our families. So...I salute every parent out there who is doing the best s/he can to see that his/her child(ren) are growing up to be thoughtul, knowledegable, caring, inquisitive, compassionate, and fair individuals. I respect your choices. Enjoy your day! Robin
Guest guest
This is so great to hear about all you homeschoolers out there in the raw world! I homeschooled my oldest through 7th grade and my youngest through 4th grade. It is the hardest thing I've ever done, but also the most rewarding! There's nothing as satisfying as teaching your child to read! Here are some organizations in the MD/VA area as well as various websites: Nancy www.machemd.org www.chenmd.org www.heav.org www.cts.com www.homeschooling.about.com www.home-school.com blakenson [blakenson] Thursday, April 22, 2004 9:23 AM Subject: Re: challenge updateWe will be home schooling Josh this year and are looking for info on getting started.
