Guest guest
Heya Holiday, Welcome to the list! My name is Vik, I have been a vegetarian for well over 13 years now and a Vegan for over 9 ... I became a vegetarian at a relatively young age for a guy. I was almost 16, and a good friend of mine's father was heavily involved in the Animal Rights Community in Toronto in the mid to late 80's and into the 90's. We is a writer along the lines of Peter Singer, et al. I would imagine he will have a book out sometime this decade (I haven't spoken to him in over 6 years, so. ... ) He taught me early on about pure ethics, that people are no more important than other animals. It was hard to see things from any other perspective ... I believe that his book will be THE most important book in animal rights history when it comes out, as it is firmly grounded in logic and seeks the purist forms of ethics to man (and let me tell you, his arguments are well researched and written). So, that's how I became a veggie ... it was a tough haul at home for a long time, but I left home and lived a very communal veggie lifestyle for a few years. I lived with three to four other people, a dog, 5 cats, a hamster, a rat, and a gerbil! Most of us were veggies (except for the cats!!) I raised on meat ... that's why it was tough at home ... my parents didn't make us eat our vegetables! That was really bad! Anji (the list manager) has a lot of shit on her website in the form of resources ... go to http://www3.sympatico.ca/anji and look for the Go Vegan thingy. Good Luck Holiday! I was wondering how you became vegetarian or Vegan? Was it not your choice at first? Like, were you raised not to eat meat? And where would someone go to find information on what it is we do eat. Thank You. I'll be looking for your replies. Holiday ---
Guest guest
Hi all. I was raised a vegetarian. Very-lacto and very-ovo vegetarian. The only other vegetarians I knew were my parents. It was horrible. Most people didn't even know what the heck a vegetarian was, and they thought I only ate grass. Seriously. I used to get all kinds of neanderthal responses when they heard I was a vegetarian. From kids, kids' parents, babysitters, teachers.. I wrote more about growing up in South America in my web page (It's not finished yet) <http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Rotunda/4434/anarcho/whyme.html>. My mother was also was very strict with junk food, and all the kids were eating hot dogs and coke while I was munching puffed rice (lice, according to my classmates). When I was about 13 my mom started eating chicken and sea *life forms* and bringing it home too. Then I started feeling lots of pressure from my extended family to participate more in family stuff, specially not only eating the appetizers and deserts when we went to restaurants. So little by little I started eating fish and shimps, and sometimes chicken too. I was really proud of myself for not eating only appetizers.. I didn't need to feel embarassed anymore. When I was 14 I moved to Germany and I got fat (gained 10lb, all horizontally) from so much cheese and eggs and fish and 3% milk. Then I got really sick with anemia and was forced to eat more vegetables and lost a few pounds. I also got really interested in nutrition, and all the books said how great it was to be a vegetarian and how bad it was to be a vegan, because you'd get so malnourished, and never having seen a vegan myself, I always thought 'they' were super skinny, malnourished and greenish, like someone going though chemotherapy. Years later I moved to Canada, found the TVA, started reading stuff, found the notmilk page and others, and I immediately stopped drinking milk and eating fish completely. The rest came along later. My boyfriend turned vegan with me too. Oh, and my anemia was totally gone without me needing to take supplements all the time, and my stomach problems and migrains were (momentarily) gone. I can't help junk food though. But now that I have gastritis I have to think a thousand times before eating junk.. well, I guess it's for the best. I've been vegan for over a year now. That's my story. -Belle ____ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Hello, well my first question on our 'change over' I have absolutely no idea where to start toward changing our household into a vegetarian one (any helpful suggestions would be appreciated) But I figured I would just jump right in and start cooking some vegetarian meals. We have always eaten pretty basically - not alot of variety - so I am going to try and change from that fairly gradually. I found a web site and have printed a few 'basic' vegetarian recipes to try....which brings me to my question...tofu....now I have seen it in the store, and we even tried it once, but none of once liked it (I told you we're not big on variety) What is it? Where does it come from? how is it made? and what are the benefits of it? I have noticed it is an ingredient in a LOT of vegetarian recipes - is it like a substitute for meat? thanks for any input Paula SAHM to Allison (8) ~ Kristina (almost 6) ~ Scott (1)
