Guest guest
Hi everyone I'm normally just a lurker on this group, content in reading other peoples opinions and advice, but tonight I'm going to be brave and jump right in. Veggies don't eat fish! People who eat fish and shellfish are certainly on the right track, but by definition they are not vegetarian. It does make it harder for the non-fish/chicken/seafood eating people among us. We thought we'd made it really clear that our son is being brought up as a vegetarian, however the other day my father asked us when we were going to give him fish fingers! My parents know a " strict vegetarian " who will not eat any meat or any dish that has had a dodgy spoon put anywhere near it, but she eats prawns. Even though their own daughter has been vegetarian for 14 years, they still don't understand what I will or won't eat. Either that or it's selective amnesia. On the subject of not so sympathetic parents, does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle them? They think I'm depriving him. I've downloaded some info sheets from the Vegetarian Society about baby nuitrition for them to read, and they've promised to read them, so thats a start. And finally, there's been a few posts recently on breastfeeding vs formula feeding. Breastfeeding should be first choice for feeding babies. It's free, perfect nuitritionally and best of all its guaranteed to be vegetarian. There are fish oils in certain brands of formula over here in the UK, and the leading brand of organic milk is made from rennet produced whey. However, I'm sure we would all agree that if breastfeeding fails then no-one would expect a baby to be starved by denying it formula. I'm pro breastfeeding but I was bottle fed as a baby, as were my siblings and I don't feel that I've been deprived in any way. Our mother loved us and overall that's the most important thing ( even though she wants to give my son fish and jelly babies, I love her too!!!!!) Keep well everyone, and keep up the good work. Lesley xx Ps. a message to anyone in the UK. Asda do a french, red wine called Corbieres. It's only £2.99, but quite tasty and is labelled as being veggie. Also all Co-op wines now have full ingredients listed, ie how it has been finished beef gelatine, casein etc, so now you can tell if your wine is non-veggie, veggie or vegan. _________ It's amazing what happens when you breathe. www.breathe.com
