Guest guest
Hope I'm not too late with some suggestions. I absolutely love The Healthy Candle Cafe. It's uptown. they have a website too. It might be listed as the Candle Cafe. It's all vegan. They have lots of macrobiotic options. Try the banana cream pie. Can't even tell it's non-dairy. If you like wines, they have sulfite free wines. It is a little pricey. But well worth it, lunch or dinner. I also reccomend Zen palate, and VP2go. Good luck, Laura
Guest guest
Argh! I have had so many e-mail problems these last few weeks! I live in New York City and feel bad that I wasn't able to get back to those of you who requested information in good time. However, I didn't actually have much more to say than has already been said. There are so many vegan and vegetarian restaurants in this city that the best I could do was offer links, which someone else already did. I did want to add, for the person who was looking for a place to live, that if you can afford it, New York City is a great place to be vegetarian/vegan (and to homeschool as well). We have great health food stores (I personally have five excellent ones within walking distance), mainstream supermarkets that stock loads of healthy foods, several alternative options for buying organic vegetables (we belong to a CSA -- community supported agriculture), many, many vegetarian and vegan restaurants, and most meat restaurants have vegetarian and vegan options. There are several vegetarian groups here as well, although I haven't felt the need to join one for my family. Even among the non-vegetarians I am friendly with, many of them eat far less meat than the average American. In my circles, people often assume you're a vegetarian until they are told otherwise, and I don't think this is so unusual around here. I don't know much about schools, since we're homeschooling (for which there is quite a bit of support), but I did grow up here and attended the local Waldorf school; they, of course, have a vegetarian meal plan. I went to a public high school but can't tell you what they served as I always brought my own lunch. Many of my friends in both elementary and high school were vegetarian, and not just because I sought them out (I didn't eat much meat but wasn't really a vegetarian until a jr. in high school). It's ridiculously expensive to live in NYC though; we're only here because we live in the same apartment I grew up in and have such an amazing deal on our rent that we can't afford to move to the country, which is where we dream of living. Guest guest
I did not know that someone else on the list was from the NYC. I was pretty shocked that I was the only one in the city.
