GMO = Genetically Modifies Organisms When scientists change the genetic structure of an organism, plant or animal. In terms of " food, " they usually do this to try to " improve " it in some way. For example, they have tried inserting flounder genes into tomatoes to make them more resistant to the cold so they would have a longer growing season. Not really suitable for vegetarians, huh? Some companies, like Monsanto, have created plants with their own built-in pesticides, like Round -Up Ready soybeans. Round Up is the pesticide manufactured by Monsanto, so these soybean plants are supposed to be able to flourish better in combo with Round-Up, or something like that. Also, Monsanto, being the ethical, caring, socially and environmentally-responsible corparate mega-conglomerate that it is (HA!), is now making Round-Up Ready soybean (among others) STERILE, so any farmer who uses it will have to purchase new seed every year instead of saving their seed from previous crops-- as many small, or poor, or third world farmers do. Nice, huh? GO ORGANIC! There is so much more to be said, and I couldn't possibly do it justice. This is an important topic for you to be informed about, so learn as much as you can. I think 80% of the soy produced in the us in GMO. Yuck. Boca burger, and Green Giant veg. burgers/harvest crumbles, etc. are GMO just like Morning Star Farms. Go organic! Hope that was helpful!
