Low Iron...

Myself and my two sons have been diagnosed with (very) low iron. As I

live in Norway I am not sure what the English translations are of the

tests we've had - different ones with different numbers. We are all

taking supplements to get our iron stores up. My husband is going to have

his iron levels checked tomorrow while at his check-up.

Our diet is varied and we eat pretty healthily - although my two year old

is VERY picky and has a small appetite and my 6 year old has begun to be

that way as well since entering Kindergarten this year. Have any others

of you had this problem in your vegetarian families? I've been veggie now

for 8 years and this is the first time my iron has gotten so low that all

I wanted to do was to sleep (that is what clued me in to having it

tested).

Any practical suggestions out there as to how to get more iron in our

diets? How about web sites to check out?

Thanks for your help! Carmen in Norway

Carmen,

There is an herb called yellow dock that is a great source of iron.

Here in the states you can buy it in a liquid(tincture) form. A dropper 2-3

times a day and it should give an adult adequate iron.

You can email me privately, if you have any more questions.

Peace,

Laura

Laura-

Thanks for telling me about yellow dock. In just over 3 weeks I'll be

heading to the States for the summer and will look into it more. For now

though I am taking 100mg a day of iron to get my stores back up to

normal. Once that happens I definately want a good supplement so that

this doesn't happen again.

Do you know if children can take this? My 2 year old had low iron as well

but has taken iron and his stores are back up. When we get to the STates

I plan to look for a good vegetarian multi-vitamin supplement for him

with iron. ANy suggestions?

Dear Carmen,

For a woman, 18mg of iron a day are generally recommended, according to the

United States Department of Agriculture. I do not know what the

requirements are for others. Some foods you might want to include more of

in your diet are:

FOOD AMOUNT IRON CONTENT

Blackstrap molasses 2 Tablespoons 6.4mg

Millet, cooked 1/2 cup 7mg

Lentils, cooked 1 cup 6.6mg

Spinach, cooked 2 cups 6.4mg

Garbanzos, cooked 1 1/2 cups 7mg

Pinto beans, cooked 1 1/2 cups 6.7mg

Swiss chard, cooked 1 1/2 cups 6mg

Black beans, cooked 2 cups 7.2mg

Almonds, whole 6 oz. (168g) 6mg

Sunflower seeds, hulled 3 oz. (84g) 5.7mg

Soy beans, cooked 1 1/4 cups 6.1mg

Bulgur, cooked 3 cups 5.4mg

Beet greens, cooked 2 cups 5.6mg

Some web pages with information on iron are:

Good luck! Hope your iron stores (and those of your family) are back to

normal soon.

Hi Carmen,

Both of our daughters tested low for iron at their 1 yr check-ups. Both

have taken an iron supplement also to bring their iron levels back-up.

Our oldest is now 3 yrs old and we give her

children's chewable vitalets by FREEDA (a vegan vitamin & mineral

supplement) the iron supplement is 10 mg (100% of the daily value for

kids under 4 yrs of age (according to the bottle) They are round, not

cartoon characters, however our daughter likes them, she calls them Luna

& sometimes they are the Sun! The address on the bottle is FREEDA

VITAMINS INC., 36 EAST 41st STREET, NY, NY 10017. I've seen Raspberry

and Orange flavors, so far.

When our daughter was 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old we gave her Tri-vi-sol w/ iron

(liquid) which also worked well & the manufacturer confirmed it was

vegan. They also make Poly-vi-sol w/ iron (liquid) which includes other

vitamins, but I'm not sure if its vegan.

We give them their iron supplements and iron rich foods w/ juice or

fruits rich in Vitamin C to enhance the absorption of iron.

I've read that calcium can inhibit the absorption or iron, so we try to

avoid meals or snacks combining calcium rich foods w/ iron rich foods.

Per nutritionists and vegan info I started giving them Black Strap

Molasses too. Approx. 1/2 - 1 Tablespoon a day which is a good source

of iron & calcium (and contradicts my previous statement!).

We also eat a healthy, vegan diet w/ iron rich foods. I was very

frustrated when my now 13 month old tested just below normal at her 1 yr

visit. I recently was checked and my iron level is normal.

take care & enjoy your visit to the U.S.
