Guest guest
I have been making an effort to not consume any animal products. I would like my whole family to do this but realize it's my choice and not theirs. My husband isn't too supportive of this. I think, because I feel very emotional about it. I'm pregnant so he is probally right. I do however, have control over what my 21 month old daughter eats and I've been keeping her away from meat. She does not like cow's milk so no problems there. She does love yogurt though and it's so high in calcium I am worried that she won't be getting enough if I stop letting her have it. I am familar with all the other foods with calcium in them but none of them (that I am aware of) have the calcium content of dairy products. And some of them she just won't eat. She does like different kinds of greens stir fried in olive oil and garlic, but more times than not she just chews them and then spits them out. She has recently stopped nursing and I am really concerned that she get all the proper nutrition she needs in a day. Does anyone have any experiance with raising vegan toddlers? I'd also be interested in any book recommendations. I am still a vegetarian, but am leaning heavily towards veganism for ethical reasons. Guest guest
The little cartons of soy yogurt which I think are yummy have listed calcium 50 percent RDA. laurenstranahan <laurenstranahan Wednesday, May 02, 2001 7:06 PM Vegan toddlers > >I have been making an effort to not consume any animal products. Guest guest
Lauren, See if you can get her started on one of the fortified soymilks. My kids were raised on Edensoy Extra (vanilla), which has plenty of calcium and vitamin D, etc... My DH and I like the chocolate Soydream (the fortified one) The different brands of soymilk all taste quite different from one another, so try a few! My kids are 5 and 8 now and guzzle the stuff even when those around them are drinking pop. It always amazes people. Susan ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! This depends on the brand you buy. If memory serves me correctly, Silk soy yogurt does have a calcium content that high. However, the Whole Soy yogurt sitting in my fridge has only 8% of the RDA. As always, it pays to read the label. ---- Patricia Bullington-McGuire <patricia The brilliant Cerebron, attacking the problem analytically, discovered three distinct kinds of dragon: the mythical, the chimerical, and the purely hypothetical. Guest guest
Lauren, I am vegan as is my 5 yr. old son. My husband is vegan except for an occasional baked good eaten out that has an egg or something in it. My son is healthy and thrives on a vegan diet. Plus I work in the wellness field, and have talked with plenty of families about the calcium myth. Dairy products actually leech calcium from the human body. The calf can use the calcuim, but humans can't do to the proteins that block the absorption. The dairy industry wants people to believe that their food is highest in calcium; but this is false. My suggestion is to go the the PCRM( Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine) website: www.pcrm.org. They have a quarterly newsletter that you can to; and will help you with any questions you might have about nutrition for adults and kids. Since your daughter likes yoghurt, there are 2 types of soy yoghurt on the market that are very tasty. Hope that helps. Peace, Laura
Guest guest
Hi Lauren, There are soy " yogurts " that are vegan. Two brands that I've tried are both high in calcium. One brand is by White Wave and the other I've forgotten (I think SOY is in the name). Also white wave soy beverages and Eden Soy Extra are high in calcium. Oh, and calcium fortified juices. take care On Wed, 02 May 2001 12:33:24 -0000 laurenstranahan writes: > > I have been making an effort to not consume any animal products. Guest guest
Hi, thought I'd put in a comment about the Tofutti. My kids love it and it really hits the spot when you are having a sugar craving. Bad thing is that it really does have sugar so if you're trying to go all natural and healthy might want to stay away from it. Have a great day Rhonda J - Jessica Alvarado Tuesday, May 08, 2001 3:09 PM Re: Vegan toddlers although not a yougrt there is a product called Tofutti that is suppose to be like a frozen yougry or icecream substance... jessica slwss wrote: Hi Lauren, There are soy " yogurts " that are vegan. Guest guest
" Tofutti Cuties " , just tried them (small " ice cream " sandwiches made w/tofu; no dairy products); my 2 boys (3.5 & 5) LOVED them; my omnivore-won't-touch-tofu husband even tasted one & liked it (until the kids told him it was tofu!). Guest guest
Imagine food just came out with ice cream sandwhiches. They don't have half the chemicals that Tofutti does. Peace, Laura
Guest guest
Actually, Tofutti came out with a new brand of their ice cream (I think it's called Supreme, or something like that) That is Cane Juice sweetened...
