Guest guest
Hello everyone! Below is a copy of a letter sent to me by my cousin Chrissy about a web site service called Progressive Secretary which seems to me a good place to further internet activism... Carmen Hey Yall, It was just brought to my attention that a recent petition to help the women of Afghanistan that I sent around was dead/closed. Since I have no desire to waste my time/energy/space, or anyone elses, by sending around dead/closed petitions, I have looked around for a more reliable way to do activism over the internet. (Not to say that ALL e-mail petitions are bogus- I think that using the internet to do activism is AWESOME, I just can't tell the difference between stuff that is still relevant and stuff that isn't.) The friend that pointed out that the internet petition that I sent around was dead forwarded me a newsletter from THE PROGRESSIVE SECRETARY, which is a nonprofit organization that spearheads a lot of internet letterwriting/activism. I checked out their website and they seem to do really good work. NOt only do they ask specific questions about the issues that you are intersted in and how many times a month you would like to be contacted about letters, they also ask you who in the government you want the letters to be sent to. This last part is my favorite because then I'm not just sending petitions with my name on them into the void that is the internet, you know?;-) Anyway, I've enclosed their web address if your interested:-) http://www.ProgressiveSecretary.Org. Chrissy Would you like a cooperative way to get your voice heard in Washington? Progressive Secretary sends out progressive email letters to Congress, the President, and other officials on peace, ecology, civil rights and other issues. The letters are suggested by participants in the cooperative and are sent to you as a proposal. If you tell us to " send " , then the letters are sent to your Congress people and others noted in the proposal over your signature and return address. A report is sent to you. If you like, you can send the letters yourself. Letters are not sent without your specific OK. Your name and email are never given out except to recipients of your letters. There is no charge for this. We volunteer our time because Jim and Pat are Quakers and long-time activists, and we believe in helping progressive people make their voices heard on important issues. There are no advertisements or other annoyances. You can cancel at any time. Contact Us! Some current letters include: * Congress Defeat Mini-Nukes Bill Participate * Congress Pass Racial Profiling Law * End Paramilitary Violence in Chiapas * Establish St. Augustine Sister City Ties * Florida Order New Vote in Palm Beach County * Free Lori Berenson Now * Issue Regulations on Genetically Engineered Foods * Open Debates to Third Party Candidates! * Pass Peace Tax Fund Bill * Protect Arctic National Wildlife Refuge * Protect Workers' Rights * Senate Lift Cuban Restrictions
