I understand that marshmallows are made with the bone marrow

of animals (the gelatin), so our children do not eat them.

But the ideas of s'mores is very appealing. Does anyone

know about vegetarian marshmallows?

thanks.

Amy,

YEs, there are vegetarian marshmallows, but I can't remember where I got

them. It was a company in NY I found on the internet (probably typed in

" vegetarian marshmallows " or looked under kosher products. THey were

imported from Israel and we got a case that lasted over a year. I'm out

of them now and may start searching again.

The Emes company used to make vegan marshmallows, but the factory in

Lombard, IL burned down. I think it may still be possible to get them

Also, some folks on the vegsource recipe board have been experimenting

with homemade vegan marshmallows. Take a look at their archives. Susan

Hi Amy & everyone,

I gave up on marshmallows once Emes stopped making them (snif!snif!).

" Jet-Puffed " brand Marshmallow Creme is vegetarian (though not vegan

due to egg whites) and spread it on the cracker to make s'mores.....

Warmly,

Emily in Boulder, Colo.

I just want to throw in the caution that " kosher gelatin " doesn't

necessarily mean that it's from a vegetable source. For example, the

kosher gelatin used by all the major yogurt companies (Dannon, Yoplait,

etc.) is still animal-based: it's from ritually slaughtered cows rather

than conventionally slaughtered pigs, so it can be certified kosher by a

rabbi. This is not to say that it isn't possible to find a

vegetable-based gelatin, from Israel or wherever, just that " kosher "

from Israel doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't from an animal.

Amy,

There used to be marshmellows that didn't have animal products made by a

company called Emmes. It was a kosher company. Their factory burnt down and

they discontinued the product.

I do not know of any brand of marshmellow at this time that is vegetarian;

although I'm still searching.

Peace,

Laura

Please be aware that kosher marshmallows may not necessarily be vegetarian.

Even though they are " parve " (meaning no meat or dairy), some Jewish

organizations who give certification do consider that geletin, when it is

prepared in a certain way, from kosher animals, kosher. The same goes for jello

products. Always check the ingredients. You'll

probably be alright though, if you go into a kosher store, the kind where

Sabbath-observant Jews shop, and find marshmallows there.

From Lisa FC

I wrote to Pangea and this is the reply I got:

We used to carry vegan marshmallows, but unfortunately the manufacturer went

out of business. There are currently NO vegan marshmallows available

anywhere. We're working on having them manufactured ourselves, but it is a

very complicated process that may take several months. When we do manage to

get them made, we'll be sure to post the news on our website

Best wishes,

No, these marshmallows were specifically vegetarian, not just kosher.

They had eggwhite in them, though, if I remember, so were not vegan. If

only I could remember where I ordered them! Susan

Last week I discovered Emes 'kosher for passover' jell-o substitute made

with no animal products; it uses carageenan [from seaweed] and locust

bean gum for the gel agent. In the same health food store, 'kosher'

gelatin and marshmallows had animal products.

I know this is a little late but....

I think I saw Martha Stewart make marshmellows on one of her programs. If

you make it yourself, then obviously you can control the ingredients. I do

not have the recipe :-( but I would think it could be found!!!

Some of Martha's recipes are on the food network website. Hers was not on

there but this one was. It has both unflavored gelatin and egg whites. Are

there items that could be substituted?
