Okay, I have to rant...

I took my five year old daughter to the doctor yesterday, for the

first time since becoming Vegans, for a school physical. And of

course, I tell the doctor that we had become Vegans. Right off the

bat, she says " You should start giving her a vitamin " . Doesn't ask

what I've been feeding her, doesn't ask how she's eating, doesn't ask

to do some blood work, NOTHING! Just says " Give her a vitamin " .

And THEN she looks at me like I'm a bad mother when I say that I

don't want her to have a vitamin! *sigh* It was very frustrating.

Just have to ask - why don't you want to give your daughter a vitamin?

There are many good vegetarian vitamins out there. Just curious...

I got the same look when I wouldn't put my son on vitamins when he was six

months old. I got the same look again when I refused to give him flouride.

There are a couple of reasons why this upset me, 1) She just assumes

that by ruling out meat products that my daughter is somehow going to

be defficient in vitamins and 2) She didn't even bother to test

anything.

I don't want to give her a vitamin, because I think it's unnessecary

in a varied nutritious diet. We eat a bigger variety of foods now

than we ever did when we were ominvouros, and my daughter is probably

getting far more vitamins now than she was before. If there is a

defficency, and she ~needs~ more vitamins in her diet, I'd preffer to

try and up the amount of certain kinds of food before I opt for a

blanket answer. The children who need the vitamins are those poor

children who live on hot dogs, white bread & pizza.

Your doctor may be thinking of vitamin B12, although vegan products

fortified with this vitamin are readily available.
