> Does anyone know of a vegan vitamin for infants that provides iron,

The best way for babies to get these nutrients is through mom's milk. Does

mom feel lacking in these? If she does then she can either eat foods with

these nutrients in it or take a supplement, but it is debatable how much she

would actually absorb through artificial means.

An infants stomach was only designed to digest human milk. When anything

else goes into their stomach, even water, it destroys some of the protective

mucous lining that keeps their stomachs intact and prevents invasion from

bacteria and viruses as well as keeping the nutrients in the baby's body.

Other foods, like artificial baby milk ( & I would suspect also vitamin

supplements), strip the stomach lining and actually take nutrients from the

baby's body. Also making the whole GI tract *raw*, therefore accessible to

bacteria and viruses.

At around 6 mos of age babies start producing their own antibodies and

enzymes to break down other foods. Until then they don't have their own

immune system. Only left over antibodies from mom for the first few weeks

and then from human milk.

Even at a year old, infants only have a 60% completed immune system.

It is no wonder that they have found that delaying solids until at least

this age or longer helped prevent illnesses such as: stomach disorders, food

allergies, respiratory problems starting in childhood and heart disease and

obesity in adulthood. But also made for healthier babies while they are

babies.

OK, that's my mini online class for the day. LOL :-)

Thanks Zena. No one is concerned if mother's milk is lacking anything.

Thank you for assuming my child is breastfed. It is simply time for her to

start vitamin supplements. She's six months old.

I didn't think that there was a " time " when babies needed supplements. My

pediatrician has never recomended them for my daughter, they are not really

neccessary. Now that she is almost 3 i give here these tiny disolvable

tablets called B-bites that are B12 but that's it.

What are 'B-bites'? My son is 14 months old and although many of the veggie

procucts we consume are B12 fortified, I am wondering if he needs a

supplement. Thanks, Madeline

B-12 Dots by Twinlab. They are tiny and disolve under the tongue. They are

sweetened with 100% Cherry flavor, no sugar, soy, yeast, milk, egg,

artificial anything.

I get them at Whole Foods.

The makers of the Twinlab B-12 Dots have stated that

they contain gelatin which was derived from beef and

pork products, so they aren't vegetarian.

I just read the message about Twin Lab's B-12 dots! We have been taking

these for years! Is it true that they are NOT vegan!? What are our

options? Does anyone know of another brand that is VEGAN? Jackie

I got the information about B-12 dots from a posting

on a vegan discussion board. The person who wrote it

had contacted the company directly, and was passing on

Twin Lab's response about the use of gelatin in their

product and it's derivation. Apparently some

companies don't list every ingredient, so before

trying any brand you might want to contact the company

first.
