Contrary to popular belief, nursing does not " wear you out " . I think this belief came about for two reasons. First, pregnancy often causes moms to feel tired (I think this is the body's way to help make sure that mom gets enough rest), so it was often believed that breastfeeding is similar to being pregnant. Second, birth and then taking care of a newborn can cause women to feel this way as well whether she is breastfeeding or not. (It is frequently reported by moms who have totally breastfed a child and totally bottle fed another child that they felt more tired from bottle feeding.) The hormones that are released from breastfeeding actually help your body to recover from the pregnancy. While women are lactating they are less likely to get urinary tract infections, anemia, post pardem depression, general illnesses like flus and colds and often find that they have more energy. Studies, research, and experience has seen moms that have serious illnesses and disease improve while lactating. Diabetics, usually needs less insulin. High blood pressure moms often don't have blood pressure problems. Remission has even been seen with moms that have cancer and lupus while they were lactating. And of course, they longer a women breastfeeds for the less chance that she has of osteoporosis, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, and other female type cancers. Breastfeeding isn't just for the baby's life long health, It is for mom's health, too! I won't even get into the world's health, as many of you can imagine the environmental damage that artificial baby milk manufacturing causes. This is my " very quick " rundown of info. Guest guest
My doctor told me that the health benefits for women, were for women in their 20's, early 30's. I forget now what age he told me the studies were done but I do remember him saying that it did not apply to me (i.e. the health benenfits in the studies) since I was over 40. None of the studies involved women my age. Have you heard otherwise? I nursed Sofie for 18.5 months and I was 41 when she was born!!! While it is true that the risk of cancer goes up the longer you wait to have children and breastfeed them I don't see any reason why this would keep you from enjoying all the other health benefits. and this is assuming that you already have or are close to getting cancer. If you don't then why wouldn't it reduce your chances?! Does that mean you would be just as healthy if you hadn't had children or breastfed them at all?! I don't think so. Just because your over 40?! It seems to me this is something similar they used to say about nutrition and exercise! I'll look and see if I can find anything from a researcher or dr. about this. Although I doubt it, as this sounds silly. Also, the studies didn't just involve moms that were only in their 20s and 30s because one of the findings of the studies were that the younger the women were when they had their children the less likely they were to get cancer. This would mean that they had to see a difference with the older women in the study. Again, this doesn't mean that they didn't benefit at all, but that sooner was better in the case of cancer, not with all the other health benefits.
