Guest guest
Hi. I thought I'd add my 2c here. My son loves soymilk - any flavor. When he was younger (he's now 3 1/2) he also ate lots of tofu. As a baby he liked it plain! I would also " marinate " it in fruit juice for a sweeter treat. We drink calcium fortified orange juice as well. There are other means of getting calcium without having cows' milk. I'm sure I've got the info around here somewhere, but maybe you could do a search for other calcium rich food sources that stay true to your veg*n diet. I know of these: almonds (could use fortified almond milk or grind them into a meal and add to foods), broccoli, collard greens, kale, turnip greens, blackstrap/molasses, tofu, soy milk, soy protein (maybe powdered soymilk added to foods/drink/smoothies?), sesame seeds, dried figs and apricots, olives... There are also so many fortified foods and drinks available, I think you'd do just fine without introducing cows' milk to your toddler. Good luck, hope this helped a bit. (You could also give your paediatrician or nutritionist a call for help) ~gv
Guest guest
My son is 13 months old and vegetarian, not vegan, but he won't drink cow's milk. He was on soy formula. So now I mix his soy formula with a soy milk. I've tried a bunch and he seems to like a creamy one made by Westbrae (I think) the best. The ONLY milk (soy or cow) I've been able to get him to drink by itself is vanilla Soy Dreams. It's in the white box (not the blue). The white box has extra vitamins and calcium added that the blue box doesn't. This is the type that is not refrigerated. He won't drink very much of it, but it's the best one I've found that he will drink at all. I recently recommended it to someone else who had been trying a bunch of different ones and she and her kids loved it (they aren't vegetarian and drink cow's milk). He used to love Havarti and Gouda cheese and soy yogurt. Now he won't eat cheese at all. And only yogurt occasionally. So I've been worried about the calcium as well. He does eat Annie's pastas, so he is getting some cheese. Like I said, he's vegetarian, not vegan. However, he does love Tropicana Pure Premium OJ with calcium. I've always hated milk and that's what I drank when I was pregnant. Just remember, the kind with pulp won't go through the sippy cup. Until 13 months he was on either breast milk or soy formula. I am trying to raise him more or less vegan but I am really worried he isn't getting enough calcium. He refuses rice milk and soy milk. I was so worried that I tried organic cheese and yougurt. He eats only a little so I don't think it is really providing him with much calcium.. I do include veg sources such as sesame seeds in his diet but he is not a vegetable fan so leafy greens aren't really an option. I feel like there may be no choice but to introduce cow's milk. Oh no. I'd really appreciate any advice. Oh-and has anyone tried calcium supplements by Floradix? Would they be a good option? I know that their iron supplement really helped me during my pregnancy. Thanks Madeline _______________________
Guest guest
I always pureed lots of different calcium rich veggies and fed them to my two children. I also used pasta made with quinoa, calcium fortified juices (Minute Maid has quite a variety now) along with almond butter as alternate sources of calcium. Remember, tastes can change SO quicky in these children; what they WILL NOT eat this week may be their favorite food in a few months. Guest guest
Just had to say that this message below is right on the money. Some products to look out for (They were at my regular grocery store except for the soy-yogurt which was at my health food store): Silk brand soy yogurt contains 50% of your daily calcium per container. NaSoya has come out with enriched tofu. It has 30% of your daily calcium and also contains Vitamins b-12, e, and if I remember correctly, D. Also, Silk brand soymilk contains the same calcium as cow's milk and has added vitamin D and b-12.
