Hi;

I'm new to the group. I'm a homeschooling, homebirthing, non vaccinating,

alternative medicine using mother of four children living in texas. I've dabbled

in vegetarianism for many years and am now feeling a real need to get my family

off of animal protein. We were vegan until my fourth pregnancy a few years ago

and never returned to our healthier eating habits. My daughter is now two and

life has become a little easier. We suspect dairy allergies in our children and

are completely disgusted with the lies perpetuated by the dairy industry. We are

lovers of nature and I am repulsed by the idea of killing another creature for

my consumption. My husband has put on lots of weight his cholesterol is too high

and I never completely lost all my baby weight with this out of a box diet we've

been living on.I went cold turkey a couple of days ago and have been suffering

what I assume is withdrawl--headaches and just feeling lousy. I'd like some

advice on easing my children into vegetarianism. We already drink soymilk and

use many plant based alternatives to meat, but my middle son just loves

hamburgers and bbq chicken. Also, I'd rather not have them suffer the withdrawl

that I have. If someone can offer advice in this area or suggest a good book I'd

really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Deborah

I'd suggest the Vegan Handbook. It's a great book for the family. Recipes etc.

Oh and my news favorite is How It All Vegan. My next favorite is New Farm

Vegetarian Cookbook. My personal suggestion is to get Boca Burgers for the kids

and fake chichen nuggets. There is so much fake stuff out there these days.

Although I don't buy any of it. We only eat veggies/fruit, grains/beans. It's so

cheap and easy to make. People forget that a lot of food everyone eats can be

Vegan too..pasta with veggies/red sauce, burritos w/out cheese, pizza w/out

cheese, any ethnic food besides french. thai, indian, ethiopian, mexican etc. As

long as you get a good variety of everything, you'll feel great. Just don't eat

tofu with pasta (both are processed foods, so it's hard to digest) The 2 best

combos for protein are beans/rice or tofu/zucchini. Oh, a good book for

nutritional info w/lists is Simply Vegan. That's the book we used when we

started being vegan.

I'd like to know more about your experience with not vaccinating. We have a 5

1/2 month year old baby and have not vaccinated and don't want to. But it's a

scary thing to think about. We think we will homeschool. I'm curious how old

your kids are and have any of them contracted anything?

Dear Deborah;

what you need is an enema...the toxions are coming out of your body

that is the reason for the headaches. Also if you could bath daily in ebsom

salt that would help

Do you best to relax as much as possiable during this time .But be sure to

clean out your colon

Hello Deborah,

I'm rather new to this group. I am quasi-vegetarian

for more than 10 years and my 4 yo daughter was born

and is raised the same. I used to work at a health

food store in Hong Kong facing similar concerns raised

by customers almost every other day.

My suggestions to meat alternatives are: using TVP,

textured vegetable protein and veggie burger mix for

beef/pork hamburgers & BBQ.

You can try packaged veggie burger mix, follow their

easy steps on burger stir-fry and you can prepare

meat-like veggie fast foods for your family. Once you

master the tricks, you can try plain TVP where you can

create your own flavor by mix & match with vegetables,

beans, tofu, herbs...

For Chinese cooking, you might want to try packaged,

frozen vegetarian chicken, beef, abalone, fish...

Maybe you can find them in your local health food

store. But beware of MSG used by some Taiwanese

brands.

There are quite a range of veggie meat available on

the market where you can try or learn from their

enclosed recipes for more inspiration. Or else, check

out related sites where you'll see tons of recipes and

ideas.

Hope the above helps.

Katrina;

Thanks for your response. I'll look up your suggestions. I tried serving Boca

breakfast sausage this morning and was greeted with disgusted snorts. We'll just

keep searching. It's funny because my kids completely agree that they don't want

animals to die for them to eat, they're just not real pleased with the foods

that I'm preparing. I think we'll all adjust in time.

To answer your questions. First, once you research the vaccine issue, you'll

find the risk of your child contracting one the diseases that he's being

vaccinated against is lower than the chance of him having a reaction to the

vaccine. My children are the picture of health. Only my middle son who has mild

asthma has ever been to a doctor. Not even a single ear infection between four

children. I'm quite confident that this is the best route for my children. I

have lots of allergies and neurological disorders in my family as does my

husband. The risk of a possibly life altering, or deadly reaction is just too

high. I'd rather take my chances with the very slight risk of disease (most of

which are quite harmless or easily treated in healthy children.) I could go on

and on and could recommend some books if you are interested, but perhaps this

isn't the forum for that. Email me privately if interested. BTW, my boys are

7,6, and 3. My daughter will be 2 this Saturday.

Try foods that don't have to been changed to be veggie. Lots of Italian

foods are easy to fix that way. My kiddos were the most responsive to that.

I have four kids too! :)

I totally agree. Try recipes that you don't use fake meat in, like Italian

pastas, Indian, Middle Eastern...

However, I did serve Morningstar Farm Breakfast Patties to 3 total

meat-eating men who always make fun of me being a vegetarian, and they had

NO clue! I've also fed the Morningstar Farm Chicken Nuggets to people who

didn't know it wasn't really chicken and to a couple of people who new, but

thought they were better than the real things. I CAN'T eat the Morningstar

Farm " hotdogs " because they feel and taste TOO much like the real thing to

me and I freak out.

I missed your original post, so I don't know exactly what you were asking,

but I think the best way to go is with totally " meatless " recipes. Don't

try to serve Chicken Divan (or whatever) with seitan or tofu.

Good luck.

If you need help with Italian pasta dishes and risotto, feel free to ask. I am

Italian and we mainly eat Italian at home (dh is Swiss but he loves Italian

cooking!) Also, I recently purchased a great vegan book that contains original

Mediterranean recipes (from Italy, Spain, France, etc) that are totally vegan,

the title is

The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen : Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Dishes from

the Healthiest Place Under the Sun

It rather denotes a lack of courage! "
