Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can give some tips on feeding a Vegan baby. My baby,

Alistar is about to turn 6 months and we have already started giving him mashed

banana. I'm very confused because I got this info from Pregnancy, Children & the

Vegan Diet. My other sources...New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook & Simply Vegan say

to start out with rice cereal and do fruit later. So, does it matter what I do

first?

Also, does anyone know how to properly make rice cereal? I don't want to buy the

stuff from the store, because it has sugar in it. I ground up the rice in the

blender before cooking it and mixed in some breastmilk to thin it out. It still

seemed sorta lumpy.

If your baby is breastfed then she might not be ready for solids, if she

really is, then smashed avocado is a really good starter food. I used to

steam sweet potatoes, I would do about six of them, then smash them and

freeze it.

Katrina,

I have a WONDERFUL book recommendation for you. It is called Super Baby Food

by Ruth Yaron. It was/is my bible (I have a 4 year old and a 20 month old dd)

Ruth goes into detail about how to make porridge from rice grains, and it is

quite simple and yummy. My dd's first foods were avocado and banana, per

author's recommendation. It is the ultimate book about feeding vegetarian

children (it is not vegan, it is lacto/ovo, but it does go into vegan options).

I can't say enough good things about this book.

Good luck and good health,

Bonnie

Katrina,

The idea behind giving store-bought rice cereals is that they are fortified with

iron. If you buy brands like Earth's Best from a health food store, they're

free of sugar and other junk, and they only use organic, GMO free brown rice or

oatmeal. When my baby was 5 months old, she started showing interest in solids,

so I started giving her package rice cereal and then oatmeal, again Earth's

Best, made

for babies. I mix it with pumped breast milk, since it's important that in the

first year, most nutrition come from breast milk (or formula, if you're not

nursing.) I'm going to do organic cooked and mashed veggies next, like squash,

greens, peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, and fruits later, because in my thinking,

i'd rather not let her get accustomed to sweeter foods like fruits. That's just

my theory

though.

Katrina,

My son is 5 now, and very healthy. Our pediatrician has a wholistic practice

and is also a nutritionist. With her guidance and lots of my own research, I

came up with some guidlines for food for little ones.

The first thing that you might want to keep in mind is that my Dr. mentioned

to me that she saw constipation in people that were fed grains too early.

That means rice cereal as well.

So, best to start with veggies first. Things like carrots, sweet potatoes,

green beans, peas, squash. We did start with fruit in the begining and

switched to veggies. There is no hard and fast to it. I thought less sweet

cravings if started with veggies. Give the food for several days to see if

any allergies develop before moving to the next food.

After all the fruits and veggies, then move to grains, then beans/legumes.

Leave out corn, and wheat, and soy till the very last. They are most

allergenic.

Remember sea veggies are great to include. And leave nuts till much later.

Peanuts last.

Hope this helps.

Peace,

Laura

My son is now 8 months old and we gave him a baby rice cereal called

" Healthy Choice " . I bought it in our local whole/organic food store. The

only ingredient in it is organic brown rice. It seems almost the same

consistency as rice flour so I'm not sure how you would grind regular rice

up more unless you have a flour grinder or somthing you could put the rice

through before you cook it?

Even so, at 6mos Evan wasn't ready for the rice cereal (he got bad diaper

rash), so we tried banana and he was fine with that. A week or so later I

tried the rice cereal again and he was fine with it. The best foods for

Evan first were: banana, apple sauce (just cooked/mashed apples), rice

cereal, and mashed pear. He also had mashed carrots and sweet potatoe quite

early and seemed fine with them. I know the books say not to give them the

sweet things first but Evan couldn't seem to digest the other things right

away. So I think you just try what seems right and see how it goes:)

My son is now 17 mos. old and when I started him on solid foods I began with

fruits and rice cereal. Many 'experts' recommend introducing veg before

fruit because they believe that fruit will lead to a preference for sweeter

things. This wasn't the case with my son- he likes a wide range of foods.

He tried carrot, squash, sweet potato, avocado etc. not long after banana.

(boiled and mashed/pureed) My son also liked to try sips of my smoothies

(banana & rice milk or OJ & strawberries)though I believe that strawberries are

not recommended for babies that young. One book which I found somewhat

helpful was VEGETARIAN BABY by Sharon Yntema. The copy I have was published

in the early 80s but I do believe it has been updated recently. As for rice

cereal,I used the supermarket find but felt okay about it as it was the

EARTH's BEST organic kind. I later found several alternatives at my local

health food store. Good luck! :)Madeline

I read that you should not feed your baby starches until they are at least 18

months old, as before that age they are missing the key enzyme needed to digest

starches.

So what your doc said makes complete sense.

It had some good ideas but emphasized dropping breastmilk way way too soon.

I think that the recipes are good ideas for older babies, though.

You can take normal rice flour & cook it like hot cereal for

non-iron-fortified cereal or just blend cooked rice. I'd told more children

react to brown than to white.

This doesn't make much sense to me, since breastmilk is sweeter than fruit.

We gave fruit first and never had any problems with it. If I had it all to

do over again (well, I do with my son) I'd wait a little longer, I think,

than put off grains until longer, too.

Actually, I just read that recent studies have shown the exact

opposite: that babies exposed first to fruit are more likely to enjoy

eating and trying different kinds of foods. You know what they

say....you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar!
