Although not vegan, I believe the first addition was vegetarian and the

second edition added a section about meat, it has great vegetarian recipes

(that I'm sure could be made vegan), for making cereal for babies all the

way up for healthy snacks and meals for toddlers. I believe the website is

www.superbabyfood.com I've also seen several on eBay.

Another book I really liked (although I loaned it to someone and never got

it back) is Vegetarian Baby and Child by Petra Jackson. It is now out of

print, but I've seen it on eBay a lot too. I believe the author is

Australian and she starts with vegetables and then goes to fruits. My

doctor said this was ok if I wanted to go this route. Other European books

I've seen start with veggies too.

I know I didn't answer your question, but I'm sure the first book I

mentioned can.

Also, have you checked out Earth's Best cereals -- I got them at Fresh

fields/Whole foods/Bread and Circus. I don't believe they have sugar.

Good luck.

Baby's 1st foods?

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can give some tips on feeding a Vegan baby. My

baby, Alistar is about to turn 6 months and we have already started giving

him mashed banana. I'm very confused because I got this info from Pregnancy,

Children & the Vegan Diet. My other sources...New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook &

Simply Vegan say to start out with rice cereal and do fruit later. So, does

it matter what I do first?

Also, does anyone know how to properly make rice cereal? I don't want to buy

the stuff from the store, because it has sugar in it. I ground up the rice

in the blender before cooking it and mixed in some breastmilk to thin it

out. It still seemed sorta lumpy.

I have seen alot of people talking about feeding their babies cereal, I have

read that baby cereals don't have much nutritional content and are basically

just fillers. I have also read that the digesting the cereal actually

leeches iron from your baby's system and that is why they have iron added to

them. They are just fine with fruits and veggies. Also, you really can't

put an age to when a child should start solids, there are many signs to watch

for, the longer that solids are delayed, usually the better.

IMNSHO, there's no reason to give a baby pureed food if you delay foods

until they're ready for them. We waited with my daughter until 7.5 months,

exclusively breastfeeding her until then, and gradually introduced table

food. Our policy is that if they're too young to eat it the way adults eat

it (meaning not pureed or prepared in any unusual way) then they're too

young to eat it. That meant no jarred slimy food, no instant powdered

cereals full of iron that hinder the naturally fantastic bioavailability of

iron in breastmilk. In addition, we are ovolacto, but waited until after 12

mos to introduce dairy, eggs, soy and gluten.
