Farm sanctuaries (was Zoos)

There is a pig sanctuary in West Virginia. In Utah there is a place called Best

Friends Sanctuary and I know there is a place called Rikki's Refuge. I am not

sure where Rikki's Refuge is located, I do know it is somewhere around Va, WVA

or Maryland. In Virginia there is another place called UPC (United Poultry

Concerns). There are tons of refuges and sanctuaries all around. If you

contact any animal rights group they would be able to list more places.

Hi Sandra,

Where do you live? I know about farm sanctuaries in upstate New York

and California and north-central Colorado (2 of them). It would be

interesting to have more info on farm sanctuaries, wouldn't it? I'm

thinking that there are probably many more we don't know about since

they often are private and/or struggling to stay afloat so there's

little, if any, advertising.

If anyone knows about other farm sanctuaries, please let the list

know!

Just do a search at or some other engine--type in animal rescue. There are

four refuge/sanctuaries within driving distance of me near San Antonio, TX and

several more across the state.

I used to work at a great sanctuary in Poolesville, MD called Poplar Spring

Animal Sanctuary. I've also volunteered at PIGS, A Sanctuary and UPC that

someone mentioned previously. My husband and I visited Best Friends in

Utah during our honeymoon...great place, but it bothered me to see the

staff eating chickens while they care for dogs, cats, and horses (there

were other animals there, but clearly companion animals were there focus).

There is a group that accredits sanctuaries in the US

http://www.americansanctuary.org/. A lot of sanctuaries are not accredited

for various reasons so this is by no means a complete list of sanctuaries.

I've found that there are usually AR or AW (animal rights or animal

welfare) people in any area that have taken in and rescued animals without

calling themselves a sanctuary. These people are usually more than happy

to have children over to see the animals and tell them the stories behind

the rescues, etc.

Good luck finding one in your area,

Linda (a big fan of sanctuaries)

Hi Sandra,

I used to live near Ithaca. (DH and I both worked at IBM Endicott.)

If you can drive a few hours, there's a nice farm sanctuary near

Watkins Glen. We visited one year for Thanksgiving, and they had a

big vegan pot luck dinner, and we fed the turkeys *their* special

feast on that day. Too bad that now that we have kids, we don't live

so close to a great place.

Warmly,

Emily

Felt the need to throw in: I went to Ithaca College. What a

beautiful place to live! Enjoyed rowing with the IC Crew team on

Lake Cayuga. Also enjoyed many luscious dinners at the Moosewood.

Sandra,

I have also been to the Farm Sanctuary near Warkins Glen N.Y. with my family.

Not only is it a very nice place with some limited overnight bed and

breakfast accomodations, but the coming autumn is a wonderful time for a trip

up to the area.

It's a good hour from Watkins Glen which is really very nice too and there

is, or at least used to be, a place with rooms and cabins on Seneca Lake in

Watkins Glen called Chalet Leon that is owned by a vegetarians couple.
