I collected the group's contributions re: Foods That Contain Hidden Animal

Ingredients and compiled them into categories below: I hope this list helps

you avoid unwanted animal products.

Lunch Foods

· Soup with chicken or beef base

· Most canned soups have chicken or beef fat or broth, few exceptions

· Dried soups, single serving dried noodles, and dried bean and rice mixes

can contain chicken or beef fat. Ramen noodles usually have animal fats and

flavorings in the powder mix

cholesterol-free

· Frozen casseroles may have been prepared with meat

· Many casserole dishes, like frozen veggie lasagne have gelatin or animal

fat

usually gelatin, Jello, Gummi candies, Rice Crispie snacks, Twizzlers, and

some but not all fruit chewy snacks have gelatin, Altoids used to have

tallow, now they have gelatin, Many other candies and snacks have gelatin

and/or fat

· Pizza or bacon flavored crackers, potato chips, Pringles often have

pepperoni or fat

· Chex snacks with pretzels and nuts usually have Worcestershire with

anchovies

not very healthy)

· Worcestershire sauce almost always has anchovies, and many ingredient

lists indicate Worcestershire sauce without saying anchovies

Drinks

· Red fruit juices, drinks and punch with cochineal or carmine (insects)

Words of caution from contributors:

· Talking to a person who worked at a factory which puts both vegetable and

animal shortening into cans, I learned the workers are very sloppy about

what actually goes into the cans; when they change from one packing

operation to the other, they don't clean the machines, they just start

putting in the other kind of shortening; sometimes it makes a mix in the

cans, despite the label.

· When getting cheese sliced at the deli counter, ask to be sure they don’t

cut the cheese in the same machine used to cut meat.

· Printing ink is made from bone black or ivory black, charcoalized bones,

not elephant ivory. Newspapers, magazines, books are non-vegetarian and

ubiquitous. Ink could be made from wood charcoal, but it usually isn't.

· I once bought digestive dietary supplements from Solgar stating " Suitable

for Vegetarians " on the front. It contained ox bile - of all things!

· Check your vitamins and supplements. Also, things in capsules or gel caps

are generally made from gelatin unless labeled vegi-cap.

· Homeopathic medicines are frequently made using animal ingredients
