Guest guest
I have this problem with my 6-year-old son, more so because he is in a stage of wanting to be like everyone else he sees around him, and really feels left out. We were recently invited to a big Halloween party for lots of kids. Lists were made of who will be bringing what, and of course all the goodies will have cow milk and butter, eggs, etc. So though it will cost a bit of money, and will be a lot of work, I am making lots of really enticing and fun-looking vegan goodies so my kids will feel just as good eating those. I intend to feed the kids lots of " rea " food before going to the party, and I will also make saran-covered plates of goodies for my children beforehand, so that their vegan plates will be full (if they made their own plates at the party, I would have to say no to several things they may choose). Its hard work, but its worth it to me, and I just try to take it one day or event at a time. Guest guest
My 8 yr old daughter is good about staying veg when I'm around. It's those times when she's off with others that problems arise. Is anyone aware of any videos or books written for kids that promote staying veg? Videos that describe what making food at Burger King & KFC really involve... without being too graphic for a child's psyche? All input is appreciated! Guest guest
Hi Tanya; good for you. It is difficult some times to be different. Kid's make it harder. But the results are well worth the extra work. Love Lynda
Guest guest
Tanya, what kind of enticing vegan treats were you planning on making? I was going to send my two year old to school with some vegan gummy bears or Panda candy, but homemade goodies would be even better. I'm thinking maybe some cupcakes with a almond based frosting, somehow maybe I could make it orange with out using food coloring, maybe carrot juice? Any recipes or ideas would be appreciated. Guest guest
Tanya, Keep up the good work... excellent plan..especially the feed then first..that way if they are not hungry the may not eat much there. Hope it works... My dd is four and a half and she too already has that wanting to be like the others thing going on... I try to let her know ahead of time that there will be things there that we don't eat at home. Sometimes that is enough to get her to ask about things when it comes time to fill her plate. Sometimes. Guest guest
I have been telling my 26 month old that we don't eat animals since she was a baby. Now we go through like a game and she shakes her head vigorously and says " NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo! " when I ask if she eats cows, chickens, etc. When we are shopping and there are samples of cookies or something and she asks for one I say " Those have cow's milk " and she says " Ohhh, for baby cows! " and won't beg for them anymore! It's great! She is definitely a whiner and very strong minded, but never pushes me on this one. It was funny, we were at a birthday party (with our own vegan cake and soy dream of course ) and she was fighting over the birthday girl's new shoes. I quietly walked up to her and whispered " Those are from cows. We don't wear cows. Give them back to Ariana now please. " And she got very serious and gave them back without argument (*very* unusual for her). She seems to understand that this is very important to us and won't push me on this like she does on everything else.
