Guest guest
Lynda: Thanks for the support! I appreciate it! =) Michelle: You asked the right person about books for keeping kids veg! =) Here we go.... Leprechan Cake & Other Tales: stories about vegetarian kids, along with recipes The Chicken Gave it to Me: how farm chickens are treated Noah's Ark: Noah is appalled to see the way animals are treated today and teached a lesson -- not biblical or religious Nana's Adoption Farm: a book about a farm animal sanctuary The Benefactory: a story of a pig's coming to a sanctuary Much Ado About Aldo, and Aldo Ice Cream: stories about a boy who becomes vegetarian Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do: activist activities for kids age 6 years and up * Hetty & Harriet: 2 free-range chickens discuss the horrors of factory farming Gnats of Knotty Pine: discusses hunting Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving: some kids help to save turkeys from becoming Thanksgiving dinner! Victor's Picnic with the Vegetarian Animals, and Victor the Vegetarian: stories about a boy who saves some lambs and decides to become vegetarian Crocodile Smile: book and tape of songs from animals' viewpoints. example: crocodile sings " I am not a Hat " Hunter and His Dog: Boy learns animal compassion with the help of his dog There is a new book that was recently released and its all about the horrors of the fast-food industry, but I can't think of the name of it right now. If you went to Amazon or such and searched for fast food, I bet it would pop up. The Vegan Handbook is full of recipes, but it also has stories -- the ones that inspired me to go Vegan. There's one from someone who was hired at a farm to collect the chicken eggs and the horrors she saw -- chickens with their wings twisted in the cage holes, broken off, stuck, chickens scratched to pieces from being stuffed in a cage with other chickens and not enough room, etcetera. Also a story from a man who was raised on a dairy farm -- he tells of the mother cow's agony at having her new calf taken from her, and her anguish at being hooked up to a milking machine. As a nursing mother, that story made me very compassionate for the mother and calf, and that's when I stopped eating dairy. One other thing that I learned from a vegetarian web site: if my kids ask for something at the store that's not vegan or they want to eat at Chik-Fil-A, etc. I respond with " no,we don't eat dead animals " . Nursing my daughter helps with not eating dairy because I express to my children how silly it is for a human to take milk for a baby cow and drink or eat it. They laugh and say that only mommy milk is for humans. =) Hope some of this helped! Sorry it is so long! Guest guest
Here's another Kid's book to add to the Book List: FOUL PLAY, DESDEMONA by Beverly Keller (1989) A Thanksgiving story about kid activists trying to prevent killing of turkeys. It's a chapter book I got for my 8 yr old. Seems to be addressing 8-16 yr old kids.
