Maria,

Thanks for the info on vegan chocolate chips! I

can't tell you how long I have been searching! =)

I would think that you could use either maple syrup

or brown rice syrup in place of honey in the apple

cupcakes! They are all liquid & sticky. Let me know

how it comes out! =)

Bonnie,

I have a 2 1/2-year daughter, and with her (and my

son since he's always with us as well), I don't tell

her about negative reasons not to eat meat and dairy.

I just try to make it very silly to think of eating

our friends. Whenever we read a book with a picture

of a cow with the udder hanging down or a picture of

piglet babies nursing, etc. , I ask ker what that is

or what they are doing. She excitedly says, " cow

milk " , or " getting pig milk! " . I smile sillily and

ask " do people drink pig milk? " . She laughs and says,

" no! " . We go on and on like that any chance we get.

Same with meat -- do people eat cows? No! Haha! I

just try to make it fun and make it sound silly and

absurd to eat animals or animal products.

I think county fairs are only in the south (?) and I

don't know where you live, but there are a lot of

county fairs coming up around here. I will bring my

kids and show them how beautiful and gentle the farm

animals are and simply ask them how they think the

animals feel being in those cages, and how they think

the cows feel hooked up to those machines. You could

probably do something similar in a petting zoo if you

have one around. They usually have farm-type animals

and you could try to show your daughter how gentle and

sweet the animals are, and how they are our friends,

so we don't want to eat them!

Also some of the books I mentioned previously are

good, gentle intros for that age.

FruitSource is another good replacement for honey. Has anyone tried the

new Tofutti non-cheese slices? I don't like them plain, but shredded on

pizza they aren't bad and they really melt!

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions! We are in the heart of Michigan farm

country, so there are plenty of county fairs, etc around here. I had been

avoiding those places, mostly because I can't stand to see the animals

there- knowing their fate- and I feel like I am supporting their practices

by attending. But you're right, it will be an excellent opportunity to teach

compassion. I'm excited to try it out, thanks again!

We have been using these slices and the shredded non-cheese. My 5 yr. old,

and my husband as well as myself enjoy it plain and on sandwhiches. We also

use it to make mac. and soy cheese.

Peace,

Laura

Yes, I did and I thought that they tasted worse than cardboard!! I thought

they were gross! We also tried the Tofutti frozen Mac and Cheese and it was

soooo nasty! I was surprised because I love the Tofutti Ice Cream, sour

supreme and cream cheese.
