Guest guest
I have an 8 year old son who I have been trying to raise vegetarian since his birth. He was fine until about age 3, when everyone else in the world attempted to corrupt him...friends, relatives, schools etc.. Now he does eat meat, unfortunately, but I do not cook any at home, and do not buy meat. I don't really want to force vegetarianism on him, because eventually then he will rebel. I would prefer that he *chose* vegetarianism...so I cook vegetarian at home. However, when he is not at home, I let him make his own choices...when we are in restaurants...and when he is at school, and out with friends. He almost always chooses meat. I would like to find a school, or a summer camp, that is purely vegetarian. My older daughter when to Au Grand Bois in Canada, which was a great vegetarian summer camp, but Lenny and Arlene have closed it down. I would be almost willing to move to anywhere in the country to send him to a vegetarian school. I have a feeling that no such thing exists. I am pretty disappointed that a once vegetarian kid has been corrupted by society, but am not surprised. All I can do is continue to set an example, and hope that some day it will have an impact on him. However, if anyone knows of a vegetarian summer camp or school, please let me know. Guest guest
We have my daughter in a Jewish preschool that doesnt allow meat, though for other reasons. It's good to know that if she grabs someone else's lunch, it'll be dairy (we're ovolacto).. Sandra
Guest guest
Laura: There is a school in Fairfield, Iowa called the Maharishi School of Enlightenment. I found an article in April 99 Teen People's Cool School of the Month when I was teaching last year. I believe their meals are all vegetarian. It seems like the best public school I've heard of. Too bad it's in Iowa and there aren't more like it elsewhere. Guest guest
Laura; I don't think your pushing anything on your son. There are no 8 year olds that know what's good for them. The diet is for his well being.???? I have a teenager and we have problems also. However I stick to my Guns on the meat issue. The raw issue is not as raw as I would like. Raising kids is no easy job.The seventh Day Advents have wonderful schools. It is a Christian format, nothing spooky. Totally vegan diet. Interesting.... I had a few teacher and friend who were Seventh Day Advents I do remember that teacher had brought in healthier versions of some " treats " for us before... ( I was only about 8 yrs old then and living on a pig farm so I never considered why) But I do also remember going to their house once and being served bread with a cheese fondu... I wonder now whether it was animal cheese? I never would have thought that Seventh Day would be vegan though as I also dated a guy who was and he and his family were big into hunting and the gorging of themselves with meat. But then again he turned out to be a cheater to so maybe he only told me he was Seventh Day to get another day not to make excuses for...hmmm... ignorance is bliss.... My understanding is that Seventh Day Adventism encourages vegetarianism, but does not require it. I have read that about 1/2 of Seventh Day Adventists are vegetarian and only a relatively small percentage of those are vegan. I'm not a Seventh Day Adventist myself, but I did notice at the vegetarian food festival sponsored by a local Adventist church that lots of the foods served had dairy and/or eggs. ---- Patricia Bullington-McGuire <patricia The brilliant Cerebron, attacking the problem analytically, discovered three distinct kinds of dragon: the mythical, the chimerical, and the purely hypothetical.
