Guest guest
> I'm an AP mom too! ++++Glad to hear that! I also help lead a breastfeeding support group ++++This is wonderful. You are doing a huge service to your community. I'm glad to hear that you could bf after reduction surgery. I have had two moms in my group that were looking forward to bf but could not due to damage from their reductions. ++++This is a subject I am passionate about. Breastfeeding after reduction is very possible, it's just a matter of how much supplementation is necessary. I supped at the breast with the Lactaid www.Lact-aid.com and the Supplemental Nursing System by Medela http://www.medela.com/products/feedprod.html I prefered the Lactaid. There is a learning curve with these devices but soon it becomes second nature. As you know breastfeeding is so much more than nutrition, you know that special bond I am talking about. There is a whole community of us " BFARS " , which stands for Breastfeeeding After Reduction Surgery. We have a group for bfars, bfar it is a wonderful, supportive, knowledgeable list full of wonderful gals! One of the founders of the list wrote a FANTASTIC book about bfaring published through La Leche League. It's called " Defining your own success " by Diana West. Here's the link to the book, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0912500867/qid%3D1005033167/ref%3Dsr% 5F11%5F0%5F1/107-4075122-1894128 You would probably benefit from this book as well as it has regular bf'g knowledge that you can pass on. She went to great lengths not to leave anything out. Wonderful book! If it wasn't for the bfar list I would have given up, they kept me going in the early days. Now with 19 months of bfaring under my belt, I help the new listers--a great feeling. Nursing Dd has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Please get the word out that it is possible. Some bfars make full supplies, some make only drops and most fall in the middle like me. We have one mom that is nursing her 2+ yr old and her almost one year old with the help of a lactation device. There is also advice on what herbs/meds to take to maximize supply, pumping routines and much more. Please refer these moms to us, we can help. I think this site is still up too. www.bfar.com They were just devastated. ++++I can understand, how old are their babies, it might not be to late. I wish this would be brought up as a problem to young women before they have their surgeries so that they could have the option of waiting until after they have children. ++++I was 22, huge breasted and just miserable. My Dr didn't even mention bf'g that I remember, (22 is quite a ways back-lol) Dr's really need to drive home the fact that even tho you feel okay about maybe not being able to bf at the time of your surgery, chances are you will feel very different in the future when you get pg. We also talk about these issues on the bfar list. > For me breastfeeding led to attachment parenting ++++Me too. I was AP'ing before I knew there was a name for it. Bf'g my daughter helped us bond after a really bad birth experience that ended in a c-sect. Hoping to have a midwife next time. So breastfeeding my babies, in short, brought me to vegetarianism. ++++This is really cool Jacqueline Please let me know if I can help with any bfar issues/questions. ~*~Mitzi Mommy to Haley 3/00 PCO article in Newsweek: http://www.msnbc.com/news/648842.asp
Guest guest
Hi Mitzi, Thanks for the BFAR info. Acutally I used to be a LLL Leader but there was no LLL group in this area so I retired from LLL and joined up as a Leader with this group. Sorry, I should have said that these women couldn't bf without supplementation and were unwilling to use the supplemental nursers. This was also a while ago so it wouldn't be possible to get the babies nursing at this point since one at least would be in school now. If I ever have another mom in this situation I will get in touch wtih you for sure. Guest guest
OK I have an off topic question for you Jacqueline. How does one become a LLL leader?? There are absolutely no LLL groups in my hometown and I am moving back there at the end of next year. I love my LLL group and can't imagine not having one around. I was thinking of doing some recruiting when I got home to get someone qualified to run one LOL. Guest guest
Erin, I'm starting to train to be a doula too. I think it will take me a while since my son is only 21 mo. and he's always with me...I can't wait for him to be at his first birth (second if you count his LOL).
