Guest guest
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU! to Sandra with all of her info on children's books. You are a wealth of information...and with my past experience with teaching and current experiences of teaching my own children now I am always looking for some good books! It is so refreshing when I can get ahold of ones that actually reflect our beliefs! My previous practice...which I still do now with the books I have and enjoy... despite their portrail of animals as objects and/or food, is to try and provoke discussion about what I don't like about the book. And my best defence (or should I say what seems to work best with my 4 year old) is to read the book properly and then add in some more appropriate words. For example.... we like Maurice Sendaks " Chicken Soup With Rice " as a story so I told her it's a good story but since we don't eat animals let's read it as " Vegetable Soup and Rice " ! She loves it and to keep it more fun yet I occasionally accidentally on purpose read it as written here and there and quickly add in " OOps I mean VEGETABLE soup and Rice " . I also try to let her know that many of the stories and songs around are used ALOT but that I don't like them... for instance " Three Blind Mice " I told her why I don't like it and she suggested we keep the music ( becuase we like it) but make up our own words. The same with " Go tell aunt Rody " . I still struggle however with the whole " farm " thing... it's hard for me to deal with myself and yet to explain to her that certain animals are only found on farms and have few to none of their kind in the wild. She doesn't believe me that there isn't really a " ponyland " like she sees on Arthur and so wants to believe in. Oh to be a kid again.... Debbie mom of Nadia 4 3/4yrs, and Daniel 2 yrs old.
