Guest guest
A while ago someone asked about vegan bum cream (diaper rash ointment).... When I brought the newborn in recently for her 24 hour check-up, the doctor asked about breastfeeding. She then asked me what I was going to use for nipple cream, suggesting " olive oil " before going on to say that she found Crisco worked a lot better because the paste nature of it made it feel cooler and stay in place better. So, I got to thinking....Spectrum Naturals makes a vegan, trans fat free, non-hydrogenated, organic version of Crisco. Why not try it? As it turns out, I haven't needed it for nursing yet, although knowing I've got an ace in the hole there (especially, something that's actually food grade quality and therefore doesn't have to be cleaned off every time the baby nurses) is comforting. But I *have* been using it on Natalie's diaper area, with no problems whatsoever. Massage therapists all swear by vegetable oils as being the best and safest for the skin, so it's not surprising that this would work well. So, there's a solution, for whoever asked. Guest guest
Actually the best cream for breastfeeding is none at all. Creams can actually cause problems. The best thing to do if you are sore is to express a little breastmilk after a feeding and let it dry before doing up your bra (if you wear one). Jacqueline - E. R. Guest guest
I had my 2 1/2 year old son Aleksander in Stavanger, Norway. There the midwives at the hospital collected certain kinds of shells from the beach, filed the sides smooth and sterilized them. I was given two in the hospital to place over my nipples under my bra if they became sore. They worked! When my nipples got sore I placed them there and the colostrum and then later the milk filled up in there and helped heal them. The midwives said that this hospital was the first to do it in Norway but others caught on. And they had orders for the shells from hospitals in Denmark. It was something their Grandmothers used to do... Carmen US citizen in Switzerland Jacqueline wrote: > Actually the best cream for breastfeeding is none at all. Creams can > actually cause problems. Guest guest
I had read that and practiced it with my second child and found it really helped. I have heard that the naturally occuring antibodies in breastmilk are great for healing many other ailments as well. I used it once or twice when my son had earaches, and, I beleive it helped. ( please note that it did not replace my doctors advice in times when the earaches were more severe). I have also used breast milk on small nicks and scrapes throughout the family. (when we were nursing and had it available... I don't think I could go up to a mom and ask for her milk...lol) --- Jacqueline <jacq wrote: > Actually the best cream for breastfeeding is none at > all. Creams can actually cause problems. Guest guest
When I developed ragads on my nipples during breastfeeding, I went to an alternative pharmacy and they gave me rose oil, which is usually meant for mouth sores. It helped the ragads heal and it was not a problem to keep nursing. Hugs, " My darling girl, when are you going to understand that being normal isn't necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage! " Aunt Frances in Practical Magic
