Hey!

Thanks for the tip. I checked the website, and saw a

huge variety of cream " cheeses " , but I didn't see

anything like soy-Mozzarella, or soy-cheddar... Does

anyone know if these kinds of cheese exist in a dairy

free version?? (I'm hooked on quesadillas....)

Thanks! ~ Juli

PS - I LOVE tofutti ice cream! Found that on day

one!! *LOL*

Hey All :)

Umm I am from Queensland Australia, and so far all I have been able to find

in the way of vegan cheese is this soy cheese made by king land, its

cheddar style and I don't really like it much.. I havent tried to melt it

yet either..

Is anyone here from Australia? and if so do you know of any good vegan

cheeses that you can use on a pizza or on top of a pasta bake? I have a

creamy cheesy style sauce down pat... its just the cheese toppings I need

help with now.. any info would be great :)

Also does anyone know any web sites where you can order (even if imported)

vegan foods ???

Thanks :)

Rikki.

I don't like any of the truly vegan cheeses! This is where I cheat, I love Veggie Slices (note: not Veggy), they are the best! They actually taste like real cheese and they melt! They do have casein in them, but I think that it is better still than eating dairy cheese, I know, what a poor excuse for a vegan!

Hi Rikki

Absolutely, I ship internationally.

Are you refering to Dr. McDougall's food or something else?

I get dizzy too and I'm not sure why. I've been looking into it.

Do you take supplements?

i just opened a package of vegan rella tonight the mozzarella flavor and it

wasnt THAT bad!! I think it might work on pizza if not gobbed on! Like a

nice thick crust baked on a pan with lots of olive oil. a nice maranara

sauce and that cheese. I am going to try it. I will put veggies on half for

us and leave half plain for the kiddos :)

I havent tried that brand you mentioned yet though :)

Yes, yes some of them do. This particular line by Galaxy is casinate free,

it's 100% Vegan. I was at the grocery store yesterday,

picking up a couple of things and decided to see if they had some of the

Vegan Cheese. They did and I came

home and made a grilled cheese sandwich with it. It melted great. Tastes

a little powdery, but pretty good.

I just looked at that web page and remember seeing some of those at the hfs

and some have casinate in them, a milk protein, so beware!! ;-)

Hi I am new to the group but have been a vegan for 5 years I would

like to respond to the " cheese " question. There are a few options,

although there are not a lot of choices of good vegan cheeses

however, there is book called " The uncheese cookbook " that you can

make yourself but, my recommendation is Give Up The Cheese. Remember

being a vegan is adventureous and trying and learning to like new

foods and even giving up the bad no matter how tasty they use to be

are part of the adventure. Cheese is one of the worst foods one can

eat so do yourself a favor and join the adventure.

My husband and I have decided that vegan cheese is ok if you eat it in

combination with other goodies and without highlighting it. I have been a

real chicken (pardon the pun) about trying a lot of the " fake " vegan

products out there, especially the vegan " cheeses. " But recently we tried

the veganrella " mozzerella " in a fabulous manicotti recipie-- it was very

good mixed with extra firm tofu, fresh spinach and basil. (If anyone wants

the recipie, I'd be happy to send it along!) We didn't use much of it, but

it did add a little dimension to the dish without tasting... well... like

vegan cheese! I have only tried eating slices on a sandwich or melted on a

pizza a couple of times-- I have to agree that the experience was not

pleasant. I think the problem is that when you eat it like one typically

eats dairy cheese, you kind of expect it to taste like dairy cheese and,

well, it doesn't. Don't take my word for it though, definitely try some out

for yourself (I know people who love it!) before you decide. I've seen

Tofutti slices, Veganrella slices and serveral more at my grocery. Good

luck!

Hi David,

Congratulations on becoming vegan! I'm a recent vegan too. I went

macrobiotic first, then vegetarian, and finally took the plunge into

veganism.

I have tried 3 brands of soy milk and found I don't like the texture of

Silk, but I really love Soy Sun vanilla and EdenSoy Extra vanilla. I find I

like the vanilla flavors better than original.

What are your questions about tofu? Do you eat fresh vegetables & fruits

with those crackers & veggie margarine?

You don't have to eat or drink anything you don't like just because it's

vegan. There are all kinds of things you can make with beans, rice, pasta,

vegetables, and fruits.

Here's a wonderful recipe for vegan queso. You could probably drizzle

it on pizza. It makes a great dip for tortilla chips. YUM! I got this

from

http://www.veganmania.com/

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1 1/2 cups plain soymilk

1/2 cup nutritional yeast flakes

1/2 cup salsa

1/3 cup oil

Mix together flour, yeast, and oil over medium heat to make a paste. When it

starts to sizzle,

mix in soymilk. Cook until thick then add salsa.

Enjoy!

Thanks Sheri!

I tried it....it's pretty good--I think I'll add garlic next time!

That might be good too! I bought lowfat blue corn tortilla chips to

have with it and it was very satisfying.

Thanks again!

Thanks everyone who suggested the " Better than Cream

Cheese " . It seems to be a favorite since everyone

mentioned it. I'll have to look for it at Whole Foods

when I go shopping on Saturday. Does anyone know if

they carry it as well as the Soymage Vegan?

So It's not actually vegan ? How do they get away with

that? That's interesting... Actually, we fed those to

my son when my mom was trying them about about a year

and a half ago, and he liked them. I wasn't too fond

of them, though, but I may try again...

I'd definitely be interested Patricia !! I LOVE

cheesecake and it's the thing I miss most about

dessert when eating out.

Thanks again everyone !

While the Toffuti " Better than cream cheese " is yummy and a great substitute, it

does contain hydrogenated oils which I would steer clear of when you can.
