Clarification

I would like to make a few clarifications on some of the things

I've said recently. I realized after I had sent in my responses, I

had forgotten to point a few things out. I must admit I made an

error when I said that lact-ovo vegetarians are just as unhealthy as

non-vegetarians. What I should have said is that lacto-ovo

vegetarians can be as unhealthy as non-vegetarians. There are heavy

smokers, eat-meat-three-meals-a-day, pour-salt-over-all-their-food

people who live to be 110. There are also people who have heart

attacks, though they were vegetarians (usually due to high stress).

When I referred to lacto-ovo vegetarians, I meant true lacto-ovo

vegetarians not strict vegetarians (by which I mean inividuals that

eat no meat or dairy, usually for health resons. Occasionally,

strict vegetarians will eat dairy or even meat because they have no

moral objection to abstain from it). When I refer to health, I mean

primarily heart disease and cholesterol, since heatrt disease is the

#1 killer in the US [although, some studies have found lacto-ovo

vegetarians to have the same risk for cancer as non-vegetarians (Food

for Life, Dr. Neal Barnard)]. Second, Dr. Ornish does allow a small

bit of dairy (non-fat)in his program, though very little. Dr.

Ornish's diet is usually considered to be vegan for the most part -

it's at least closer to the vegan diet than the lacto-vegetarian

diet. Most of the other doctors that use a plant-based diet do not

allow any dairy.

The 20 year Bogalusa Study found that virtually all Americans

(those not on a plant-based diet) have varying degrees of heart

disease (A Vegetarian Doctor Speaks Out, Dr. Charles Attwood).` For

every 100 mg of cholesterol consumed from milk, cheese, etc., the

overall cholesterol level usually increases 5 points (Food for Life,

Dr. Barnard). It has been found that individuals with cholesterol

levels under 150 mg/dL do not have heart attacks, and exercise alone

will not counterract an unhealthy diet(high simple sugar intake and

fat intake over 15%, high stress, etc.)(A Vegetarian Doctor Speaks

Out, Dr. Attwood). Anyone seen the new cholesterol medication

commercial? It says something like 1 in 5 has cholesterol levels

over 250 mg/dL (I'm sorry, I can't remember the exact figure) and

most people don't know they're at risk.

If one does take in dairy occasionally, consider stopping

altogether. Dairy cows are raised in the most inhumane conditions

(even organic cows), live four years instead of the usual 20, and

dairy production directly supplies the veal industry.

I know many of you will probably think I'm being preachy, and in a

way I am. But you must realize I have devoted the past six months to

researching veganism, beginning when I found out about the horrors of

dairy industry. Whatever is your own beliefs, this cannot be denied -

humans do not need dairy products to survive and it's very painful

for the cows.
