After reading that article I am a little worried about b12-whether or not my

son is getting enough. He is 22mos. and eats dairy perhaps twice a month and

honey in some baked goods, otherwise he is vegan. I don't give him

supplements apart from a teaspoon of EFA (sunflower, sesame, borage, etc.) oil

everyday. I feel that he eats very well and we rarely eat convenience food.

He does eat tofu dogs by YVES and soy milk which are both fortified with b12

but not a lot. Can anyone suggest a good veg friendly book on b12 or, better

yet, some foods that are high in b12. I know he's healthy but I can't get

that silly article out of my head so I'm hoping for a little reassurance.

It's great to be a part of this group....Thanks, Madeline

" Becoming Vegan "

It's written by two registered dietians who are experts in vegetarianism.

It tells the facts and doesn't glamour everything up like other book can.

You might find it at your library.

" Simply Vegan " has good info also.

Red Star nutritional yeast has a reliable source. Anything that's fortified

with B-12. Spirulina, tempeh, etc... are not reliable sources. If I were

you I would read your labels carefully and make sure he gets the minimum RDA

**every day**.

That is a sign! Trust your head, it's probably telling you something very

important.

Good Luck and best wishes!

i help my daughter (who is vegan) get B12 from nutl. yeast. she

absolutely adores it on noodles.......and the new farm vegetarian

cookbook has a great recipe. it is 1/2 cup nutl. yeast flakes with

1/2 cup of flour (i have used w.w. pastry and it's fine) and 1 tsp.

salt and 1/2 tsp. garlic powder) ........stir that around and heat

it a little and then add 2 cups water.......after it has thickened

and boiled you let it go for 30 seconds, take it off the heat and

then add 1/4 margarine and 1 tsp. wet mustard. this is yummy and

quick.....my dd and i had it for breakfast today!!!

i think that nutritional yeast is a good and easy way for vegan kids

to get their vitamins!

much love,

I LOVE nutritional yeast! There is an excellent recipe for Southern Fried

Tofu in Vegan Vittles. I like to take the left over ny mixture and mix it

with noodles, olive oil and extra garlic!! It is so good, but my breath

stinks for two days!

Thanks for the advice. I have been feeding my son nut. yeast (in the form of

Road's End Organics ww mac and chreese) for some time now. Is all

nutritional yeast high in b12 or does it have to specify b12 fortified? I

buy it from the bulk section at my hfs and the label doesn't specify any

ingredients or additives. If it is fortified, what is the source? Thanks,

Madeline

Nutritional yeast comes in flakes, it is a yeast. You can use it in cooking,

alot of people use it as a sort of " cheese " replacement. It has a kind of

nutty taste and is a good source of B vitamins and protein.
