A well-planned vegan diet can easily be followed during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, and in childhood. During pregnancy, the body needs extra calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is important to note that soy milk, rice milk, and homemade formulas should not be used to replace breast milk or commercial formulas during a child’s first year. Introduce new foods to a baby only one at a time, to identify possible allergens. Do not restrict fat in a baby’s diet before 2 years of age. Fat sources include avocados, olive oil, and nut butters. Nut butters are possible allergens, so watch carefully for signs of allergic reaction. Nut butters should be given only to babies over 1 year in age, and only with supervision.
