Hi all,

I was just wondering if any of you regularly use herbal and/or homeopathic

remedies for your kids, and if so, from what books or other resources do you get

information to help you? I'd really like some recommendations. Thanks!

I am actually just starting to look into herbal remedies myself. We

have a really good herbalist in our area who wrote her own book,

however I think that it is only available locally here. But if I

find out that its available on a larger scale I'll let you know.

When I was pregnant I found a natural pregnancy book by Aviva Jill Romm. I

liked her outlook/approach so I've also read her book on childcare but can't

remember the name of it. What I do is head to the library and checkout all

the books on natural chilcare and related topics and then browse to see if

they're what I'm looking for. This is the most cost efficient way to do it

as I find I often read 3 or 4 books that are not what I'm looking for before

I find one I like. I have also been known to call local hfs/herbalist/etc.

and ask if they have anything for ear infections (the plague in our home).

The first time I did this my son was 7 mos. old and truly in pain. The doc

was being alarmist, almost threatening, telling me about permanent hearing

loss etc. I got out the free magazine (really advertisements) that I'd

picked up at the hfs and started calling. One man told me what he had used

for his daughter and even stayed open late so I could pick it up. You could

also check with your local naturopath if they ever have free info sessions

for the public (some do this hoping to get new clients) or ask a

chiropractor or midwife as they are often familiar with alternative forms of

healing. Mothering magazine often has some tips or info on resources. I

always ask the person at the hfs if they know any natural remedy for

whatever is ailing us. I don't usually buy what they suggest without doing a

bit of research but I find I usually learn something interesting. Good luck,

Madeline

I regularly use both homeopathic and herbal medicine for my children.

I do have to say, though, that my children have rarely been sick. The exception

to this is when

my son was three, he came down with a massive double ear infection and became

severely

dehydrated. None of my remedies worked. That was the only time that I resorted

to western medicine.

Most of my information comes from these sources: Natural Healing for Children by

Winifred Conklin, Natural Health magazine, Handbook of Bach Flower Remedies, and

The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. There are several sites that I

go to for info, not advice. I also

have a local chiropractor/homeopathic practitioner that is wonderful about

giving me feedback over the phone.

Let me know if you have specific questions.......
