Guest guest
I have an almost 2 and a half year old daughter in a similar daycare situation. To be honest, at this point she really couldn't care less that the other kids eat something different for lunch (and she has a rather extraordinary self-esteem!) We are ovo-lacto, but she's allergic to milk...so she can't have that at lunch, either. The daycare people are quite cooperative about the whole thing and we've discussed what they will say if she asks, but she hasn't asked. We've worked out a system of me bringing either pre-prepared frozen food or " leftovers " from home. Sometimes I try to " match " what's on the school menu, i.e. if they're having chicken noodle soup, I bring some kind of noodle-y veg soup. The cook at the school is also pretty cool about making " matching " food for her. The problem much of the time is that what my daughter is having looks SO much better than the institutional food they serve that the other kids (and teachers!) want HER lunch. I did have a go-round with our local dept. of Children and Family Services about whether bringing food from home violated health dept. guidelines, but since it is stored separately and it's only for my own kid (i.e. I'm not feeding the whole class) and I signed a waiver, blah blah, blah, everything is fine. It did require finding the exact regulation and pointing out that they were not interpreting it the way it was written. good luck, Carol (mom to Lucia, 2 1/2 )
