Guest guest
I too have been saddened by most veg parenting books and their stance on breastfeeding. Most are pro-breastfeeding for infants, but some will even make the comment that after six months it is harmful to a child not to start them on solid foods. I think this probably comes from trying to be 'on the safe side'. Since vegan parenting is not the societal norm they might error on the side of over caution about nutrition. That said, I would not throw any book completely out. I have found there are few books out there (especially on parenting) that I agree with 100%. This does not mean there is nothing helpful or valid in the book. Just like anything else we all have to keep ourselves informed and also go with what feels right to us. I don't agree completely with Dr. Spock, but I appreciate his last book...especially his stance on veganism. Even the best 'experts' have their own view on life and this always comes into the equation. Especially, when it comes to parenting and nutrition there is a lot we don't know. I have over a score of parenting books and none of them cover my exact views on parenting. I have Dr. Kappers book and would give it to others. Just like a I have several of Dr. Sears books, but I don't agree with giving chicken bones to babies for them to teeth on. I still give The Baby Book to friends. Just my two cents. By the way I really like Compassionate Souls (great book about one person's experience with vegan parenting) and it was sort of given negative reviews by some veg groups because they don't like her nutritional info (she is not a nutritionist).
