Guest guest
My 18 month old toddler refuses to drink water. I've tried distilled, R.O., and filtered tap water and water with fresh lemon in it but he just nips at these. I've tried mixing the water in with pure, not- from-concentrate juices (orange, apple, pineapple, and grape) but he's not crazy enough about juice to drink a sufficient supply of water in this way. I'm still nursing him about 3 times a day but his pediatrician agrees that he needs to drink more water, especially because of the heat. Sometimes his urine has a strong smell to it and recently I've noticed dark circles under his eyes, symptoms that I believe are due to insufficient water. Do any of you have tips on how to encourage a toddler to drink more water? Thanks!

My son went through the same thing around that age. We bought him a bunch of different special cups until we found ones that he liked. We also let him use " big people " cups while at the table, that was a hit because he wanted to be like Mommy and Daddy. Whenever we went to the store and bought ourselves a bottle of water, we bought him a smaller size. He would sometimes spill it, but we were getting him to drink it. We also mixed some juice in his water, it helped when we finally found his favorite, which was orange. Good luck! Sara
Guest guest
My 14m old likes decaf iced teas.He particulary likes ginger peach, wild berry plum.I make them very weak but it flavors the water so he doesn't get bored with drinking water.Maybe start off making the tea full strenght for him so he doesn't even suspect its water and slowly dilute it. Games - play chess, backgammon, pool and more http://games./
Guest guest
A sure way to get my son, now 24 mos., to drink water is to put it in a real glass 'just like mama's' or better yet the very glass I am drinking from. I drink my juice diluted so I share this with him, too. Funny how 'mama food/drink' always seems to taste better to him. However, he's broken more than one glass this way no matter how careful I am. We also juice together and have since he was 15/16 mos. Because he helps put the carrots and oranges in and watches the juice come out he is eager to drink it even when I've diluted it. You could also try a twirly straw if you are really worried. And, though I'm not a nutritionist, I believe foods such as watermelon have a high water content. My Mexican friend makes her son homemade lemonade but it is loaded with sugar. When I lived in Japan, I noticed that even very young children drank iced tea (oolong/barley) and enjoyed it. Hope this gives you some ideas, Madeline PS Is it that he doesn't like to drink from a cup/glass? Could you get him used to the idea by expressing milk once in a while and giving it to him in a glass? > " admartin " <admartin > > > Help with Anti-H20 Kid >Mon, 22 Apr 2002 14:09:58 -0400 > >My 18 month old toddler refuses to drink water. Guest guest
Hi, What about fruit juice pops? -- just freeze juice in popsicle molds. My kids drink more of anything when they have a straw (especially the re-usable crazy straws -- the ones that are twisted into loops and patterns), or funny or " fancy " cups. A lot of fruits, such as grapes and cantelope are very high in water content also.
