Guest guest
The Washington Post April 19, 2002, Friday, Final Edition EDITORIAL; Pg. A24 Milk Wars As a taxpayer and mother of young children who have never consumed dairy products, I do not want to help promote a product that was not designed for human consumption. Cow's milk has the required nutrition for a calf to grow into a hefty cow. When humans drink cows' milk, the body has to work at trying to digest all of the unnecessary calories. Despite rising consumer concerns, most milk still comes from dairies, where cows are injected with Monsanto's controversial Bovine Growth hormone (rBGH), a hormone often associated with higher risks for cancer. Even a famous pediatrician, Dr. Benjamin Spock, revised his last edition on child care to say that cows' milk is not intended for human consumption by children. Why should my children have to feel as if they are not normal because soy milk is not provided in school? My children love vanilla soy milk, and Regis Philbin drinks a glass of chocolate soy milk on his daily talk show. We should continue to subsidize cows' milk only if we are going to allow calves in the classroom.
