Walmart has a new low fat yogurt without gelatin. Yo Crunch. It is the first

low fat yogurt I've seen in many years. Gelatin has been being used in more

and more kinds of yogurt. Now you have to check each different flavor of

Danon fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt for gelatin; Dannon plain remains

gelatin-free.

That is good to know. I don't understand why they need to add gelatin to

yogurt? I'm trying to eat more soy yogurts, but it's still annoying if I want

regular yogurt.

Here in Canada, anyway, Neilson fatfree yoghurt (0.1% fat) is

gelatin-free (and kosher). So are Beatrice fatfree yoghurt and

Yoplait fatfree yoghurt. Some types of Astro lowfat yoghurt (1.0% fat)

are also gelatin-free and kosher.

 

The Lucerne yoghurts, however, of all types, contain gelatin 8-(.

Yoplait in the US used to be non-gelatin, but they changed some years ago.

Sometimes if the yogurt, or anything, says Kosher, it might be made with

gelatin from cows rather than pigs. Kosher for passover seems to mean a

gelling agent from plant sources, like seaweed carageenan. Sometimes

companies use food starch rather than gelatin to make yogurt, especially low

fat yogurt, creamy. Recently I discovered gelatin in Planters dry roasted

peanuts, which you would think would be nothing but peanuts, salt, and oil.

Trust me, I read the label. Here are the ingredients in the Yoplait

Basket Fat Free Red Cherry yoghurt I had for lunch (and BTW Yoplait

only recently became kosher in Canada, with the MK hekhsher):

 

Milk ingredients, sugar, red cherries, active bacterial culture, milk

serum proteins, modified corn starch, natural flavours, pectin,

concentrated lemon juice, colour.

 

Kosher for passover seems to

mean a

This company uses corn starch and pectin, as you see above.

 

Recently I discovered gelatin in Planters dry

That is indeed annoying. It just goes to show that we must always read

labels!
