Guest guest
Hi Jamie, It's never easy trying to convince die-hard meat eaters that a vegetarian diet is healthier. However, I would suggest that you inform them of some basic nutritional facts about vegetarian nutrition. The following statistics come from the " Nutritional Almanac " , Third Edition, Lavon J. Dunne,pp. 268-304 where animal foods are compared against vegetarian foods. According to this publication 4 ounces of ground beef contains 18 grams of protein, 10 mg calcium, 258 mg potassium and 15 grams fat. On the other hand, 4 ounces of Pinto beans contain 23 grams of protein, 129 mg calcium, 935 mg potassium and only .1 gram of fat. 4 ounces of dry black beans contain 22 grams of protein, 135 mg calcium, 1035 mg potassium and only .2 grams of fat. You may also wish to contact the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine www.pcrm.org, where you can get a " vegetarian starter kit " full of info and facts to share with your family and friends. Other than giving your family nutritional information, I would simply tell them that you only want what's best for your son and after reading the nutritional facts, you're convinced that a meat-based diet is not as healthy as a whole foods diet for your son. Good Luck!
