Guest guest
Hi all, I have three areas of interested that I though some of you may be able to help me with. First I have decided to homeschool my dd who is five years old and would be in kindergarden at the pulic school ( if she were to go...as we all know it's usually based purely on age and nothing to do with ability). Anyway , I was wondering if any of you could suggest some good books teaching about vegetarianism, health nutrition, veganism, etc. that whould be geared towards her age/academic level... at this point she is far ahead of most of the " kindergarden " materials and would be learning at about a first to second grade level I think. Suggestions for beginning readers would be good as well, as I'm sure she would delight on " discovering " some new things as well. By the way she is vegan and understands well why, and chooses to follow this without much hoaxing, she only doesn't understand why others aren't vegan... and needs more info on nutritionand health in general. Secondly I think once before sombody had used the term " unschooling " in one of the posts a while back and I was just wondering what exactly the term means and whether any one can provide me with links to good information on that topic. Last but not least I have searched high and low for any sites that may carry vegan art supplies or some sort of guide that provides sources for various mediums and information on their ingredients. I am and have been a mad crafter for as long as I can remember but I know that some of my supplies most certainly contain animal derivatives but since there are no requirements for ingredients other than for toxidity ( which aren't always acurate) It's really hard to find out. I reallly use a vast variety of materials so it would be quite difficult to try and contact each and every company individually in the hopes that they would reply, and honestly know and answer my inquiries. Thanks a lot!! Debbie - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost

Guest guest
Debbie, Sounds like you've been homeschooling all along. :-) First, if you are interested in 'unschooling' I would suggest reading anything by John Holt. 'How Children Learn' and 'Learning All the Time' are my favorites. One of the great things about unschooling is everyone can define it their way so it means different things to different people. You might want to take a look at http://www.unschooling.com/ and The Unschooling Handbook. Basically, unschooling trusts a person (child/adult/infant) is born with the ability, desire, and need to learn. We learn from day one (before day one depending on your beliefs). We learn how to eat, how to walk, how to talk, etc. without formal 'school' then bang you turn 5 years old and all of the sudden you need to sit still in a classroom waiting for someone to fill you with knowledge. :-) Some unschoolers use text books, others use life experience, some have lesson plans, others find they learn better just living their lives with their kids....no rules really. Enough about that... We make a lot of our own cleaning supplies, play dough, etc. You can find recipes in vegan cookbooks or environmental books. We use the soy crayons by PRANG (I believe that is the company's name...they are all broken so I can't read the labels). Books: Victor's Picnic and Victor, The Vegetarian are good books, but they say 2 - 7 years old so they may be too 'easy' for your 5 year old. Saving Emily is a great book to read to younger kids...it is a longer chapter book. Check out the Vegetarian Baby and Child magazine website for a list of veg friendly books. Vegetarian Resource Group's website also has a list. We like to make our own around here. Good luck, Linda - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember./tribute
