Guest guest
My family has been vegetarian for a while and are now making the transition to veganism. My 2 boys age 3 and 5 don't like the taste of soymilk-any suggestions as to how to get them " used " to it? I know others make their kids fruit smoothies with soy milk, but my kids don't like smoothies, even with cow's milk (I don't know why, they love fruit!!). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Karen

I rarely drink soy milk anymore once I discovered rice milk and almond milk. Give those two types a try. The aftertaste is way better. I never liked cow's milk when I wasn't veg. Try different brands of rice milk to see which suites your taste. Peace, Laura
Guest guest
My 3 year old daughter will not drink soy milk either. I haven't pushed it, but I thought about mixing some soy milk into the cow's milk and slowly increasing the soy and decreasing the cow. The problem is that she refuses to drink milk at home, so I'd have to do it at daycare and that's a bit much to ask of them. - Karen McLaughlin Wednesday, October 02, 2002 9:11 PM getting kids to drink soymilk My family has been vegetarian for a while and are now making the transition to veganism. Guest guest
Have you tried different brands? Silk seems to be a favorite with non-vegan kids I know...they have all sorts of flavors now too. My ds prefers Edensoy original, but he was raised vegan so he didn't have to 'get used to it'. When I first went vegan I preferred rice milk to soy milk hands down (now I love soy too). Try different grain milks or nut milks (I love almond). I think it just takes a little trial and error to find one they like the taste of...you could also add vegan chocolate syrup or some of your own flavorings. Good luck!! Linda PS Ds didn't like Silk, but once in a while he asks for the Silk non-dairy creamer and drinks that straight....ugh! You never know what they are going to like. Guest guest
My situation is different from yours in that my daughter is vegan from birth, but she also would not drink soymilk at first. We put it in her cereal, and that was fine, but she wouldn't drink it from a cup straight up (nor will I for that matter. I don't like it.) What really helped though was switching brands. I still cook with and pour in cereal our original brand, Soy Dream Enriched Original, but we found that the vanilla flavored Silk brand was much more palatable to her for straight up drinking. It can be a little expensive in the short term to try different brands, but you might hit on something they'll drink. In desperation, try chocolate flavored Silk. In the meantime, console yourself a little with these ideas: 1) Calcium enriched orange juice is even better than enriched soymilk from a calcium perspective. Beyond calcium, the other major nutrients you want to get from soymilk are Vitamin D and A and protein. The vitamins are found in other fortified foods or in a multi, which is never a bad idea, and protein is easily found in other foods, as long as your kids eat some amount of veggies, beans and bean products, and nuts, seeds, or nut and seed butters. 2) Try to cook with soymilk where possible. For example, if I haven't had time to cook, an occasional stand-by food for my 18 month old is Fantastic Foods soup cups. You're supposed to add boiling water to them, but recently it occured to me to add boiling soymilk (original flavor, not vanilla) instead, and if she eats the whole cup, that's 6-8 oz of soymillk right there, which is almost all she needs per day (she still nurses.) So even if they won't have smoothies, think about replacing the water in recipes with full-fat unflavored soymilk. Hope that helps Leena Karen McLaughlin [karenmcl] Wednesday, October 02, 2002 9:11 PM getting kids to drink soymilk My family has been vegetarian for a while and are now making the transition to veganism. Guest guest
My son didn't like the taste of soymilk either, so I used a 'sneaky mom trick' that someone on another list suggested. Once about 1/3 of a quart of cow's milk was gone, I'd replace it with soymilk. Then with the next quart, I'd give about half of it to my hubby, and replace it with soymilk. Then 2/3, until eventually my son was just drinking soymilk. That way, he adjusted to the taste gradually. Guest guest
Silk is the brand that I like too. I've tried others, but this came the closest to " real " milk that I have found. My son LOVES the stuff, but it is all he has had, other than breastmilk and soy formula. He has had cow's milk on a couple of occasions and drank that too, so apparently he is not too discerning. LOL. - Linda Evans Thursday, October 03, 2002 4:49 PM Re: getting kids to drink soymilk Have you tried different brands?
