getting kids to drink soymilk

Try different brands. My son will ONLY drink soy milk. He used to drink

the plain and vanilla, but now I'm just buying the vanilla because I like it

on my cereal. I tried many different ones; he wasn't as picky as I was. We

just recently switched to vanilla Silk -- in the refrigerated section, but

before that we were drinking Soy Dreams. These aren't as tan colored as

some of them. Recently I bought the brand they sell at Costco and couldn't

even eat it on my cereal. Just keep trying different brands is my advice.

getting kids to drink soymilk

My family has been vegetarian for a while and are now making the transition

to veganism. My 2 boys age 3 and 5 don't like the taste of soymilk-any

suggestions as to how to get them " used " to it? I know others make their

kids fruit smoothies with soy milk, but my kids don't like smoothies, even

with cow's milk (I don't know why, they love fruit!!). Any suggestions would

be greatly appreciated.

my message seemed to dissapear in my last post but my suggestion was

similar to a number of others. Try the gradual replacement method -

worked great milk. ALso, try different brands. My families personal

favorite is vitasoy original. Much less beany tasting than some

others and a good aftertaste.

All this talk of milk drinking makes me have a question of my own.

My daughter is 18 months. She breastfeeds twice a day (sometimes

three on the weekend) and has two 8 oz bottles of soymilk a day.

Could she be getting too much milk???? She seams??? to be eating

enough food and gaining weight okay. She has been on the tall and

skinny side of the curve since birth but her weight gain has been

constistant. We just moved, so I dont think my new doctor will be of

much help since she doesn't " know " her yet. Any thoughts?

I just found it in 1/2 pints and I'm so excited. I can take some with me during

the day. They also have a latte (I think) one that is pretty good.

Thanks to everyone who suggested soy margarine spreads. Earth Balance was a

popular one, so I just bought one. It is pretty good.

We don't drink much Silk because of the carageenan and

because it seems to have a lot of sugar, but I

recently saw an add for unsweetened Silk...has anyone

tried the unsweetened version?

We do love to splurge on Silk Nog around the

holidays...yum!

Hi there!

I'm lacto-ovo, not vegan, but I do avoid dairy as much as I can.

My doctor told me that children after a certain age (say, 24 months, maximum

3-4 years of age) don't need to drink ANY kind of millk. So it's just a

question of them not feeling special, and a question of doing our loved

recipes, otherwise why make them drink even soymilk? My son has a small

problem with cow's milk anyway (if he drinks more than a cup it gives him

tummy ache), so I don't give it to him and he usually doesn't complain.

I use soymilk or rice milk or oatmilk (wonderfully sweet even without any

sweeteners) for cooking, breakfast cereals, bechamel cream etc... As for

drinking, as they don't taste so great, I only use them with carob powder in

it and plan to give them biscuits to dip in it. Then it's okay.

I try not to overdo it with soy dairy replacements anyway, as I heard they

are bad for health (I have lots in my files about that, I've made a thorough

study because it was important to me. If anybody is interested I can send

the info offlist). Soy in bean form is good, soy sauce is good, but soy milk

and tofu should be used in moderation, so it's good there is rice milk and

oat milk for variety.

As for TVP,it is a highly processed thing which makes me highly suspicious

as far as healthy eating is concerned. (I know, not all vegetarians are

concerned about healthy eating, but many are). It can come in handy when

cooking for non-vegetarians, and if one insists on some traditional recipes.

I use it too, maybe once in six months, that's all.

In my opinion, we should re-think the idea of using replacements and

substitutes all the time. It's like getting a message that these things

which we choose not to use are really indispensable, and if we don't use

them, we should use something looking or tasting like them to put in their

place (replacements that taste like meat make me sick!). Why not re-think

our menus and habits instead, finding alternative foods?

Ok, don't start throwing things at me, but I loved meat!!! I have been a

veg*n for eight years now and could never go back, but I gave it up because

of the animals and partly for the health reasons. I sometimes miss the taste

of meat, so I use lots of meat replacements. I grow up in a big meat and

potatoes family and I have a hard time giving up those tastes that remind of

a simpler time.

Yes I tried the new unsweetened Silk. I liked it.

We drink mostly rice milk and almond milk.Sometimes soy. I've found Silk very

sweet as well.

I can tell you that I was at the Natural Foods and Products expo here on the

east coast this week. I got to see all the new things coming to the health

food store near you. I found 2 new milks at the show. One is from Pacific

Foods. It's Halzelnut milk. Very good. It does have carageenan. The sweetener

is rice syrup, so it's not too sweet. The other milk you can make yourself.

It's hemp seed milk. Manitoba Harvest is the company that makes the hemp seed

nuts. They come in a foil bag. Take a 1/2 to 1 cup and blend with water. It's

great in tea or coffee or in cooking. I don't know how it would taste plain

or in cereal. I had it with Yerba Matte tea.

Sorry for the long answer to the short question.

Peace,

Laura
