I just was lucky, I didn't adore meat anyway, so giving it up was not a big deal, but I understand it was just luck, because for instance I like sweets, and I try not to eat many, and it's a torture! So I can understand that meat replacements can be really precious in someone in your situation, or when entertaining friends. But my point was that in many other cases, the heavy relying on them is just cultural laziness, if you know what I mean, unwillingness to depart from known menus and schemes. Actually I did like some meat dishes, like for instance donner kebab in pita bread. Interestingly enough, the only two times that I felt the temptation of meat were during my pregnancies. Once it was the pungent smell of donner roasting in the street, the other was the smell of salami in a supermarket. Has anybody had similar experiences? I hadn't had them in about five years and I did give in to that craving. I have a friend who gets them from a local farm, they are definitely cage free and organic. I had them a couple of times, then they started to disgust me again and I can't eat them anymore. Unfortunately, my almost three year old loves them and insists on having them a few times a week! Guest guest
Actually, when I was pregnant meat/eggs/ and especially dairy disgusted me more than ever. I really craved avocados...I ate them almost every day. Once my milk came in, I couldn't even look at cow's milk without almost crying. However, a 'trying to be veg' friend of mine craved meat her entire pregnancy and ate it non-stop. I think a lot of cravings during pregnancy are emotional...maybe comfort foods, etc. (I saw this because I craved strawberry cupcakes...when I actually ate them I ended up getting disgusted, even though they were vegan, and fed them to the pigs.) Although, I know people who swear the food cravings are our bodies way of telling us we need some nutrient (I don't believe that for myself since my body grew up on crap! but I do believe this more for my son who hasn't been brought up on over-processed junk food like I was). Anyway, I would look at my protein intake if I was craving meat or maybe iron intake and see if eating more protein or iron-rich foods got rid of the craving. Hi Irene, I craved meat when I was pregnant and I ate 3 cheeseburgers on my first trimester. I don't feel good about it, but I don't feel bad either. I guess I just wanted to fill an emotional gap or something... I don't know... but I really felt this urge to eat meat and did it. Now I'm back to " almost " vegan.
