I have been enjoying receiving the e-mail of postings for a while

now, but have never actually posted myself. We all know how much

more healthy a vegetarian (or vegan) diet is, that's why we were on

vrg in the first place right? I am looking for some source of some

documentation that supports this that comes from what my meat eating

family would consider 'legitimate' (not something from a veggie

publication or animal rights orginization that could be viewed by

someone who is trying to find fault as slanted) I'm looking for

something from a non-biased type of source(published in AMA

journals, etc.)that supports veggie nutrition for children/teens.

I appreciate the help, I'm having to defend my daughter's choices to

her ignorant father.

Try contacting PCRM( Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine) here in

the D.C. area. They are wonderful with providing those type of articles and

info.

Good luck,

Laura

=> The American Dietetic Association has a Position Paper on Vegetarian and

Vegan diets, I think it's available on their website, which if memory serves

is http://www.eatright.org

Another good source of information are the books Becoming Vegetarian and

Becoming Vegan by Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis (both registered

dietitians). These books site many research studies published in

peer-reviewed journals.

Hope this helps.

I would contact the Vegetarian Resource Group. They can direct you to the

American Dietetic Association's position paper on vegetarian diets for kids.

They have other materials in this vein (non-biased, scientific) as well.

Also, PCRM's website may direct you to some good sources. There was just a

recent study reported in many different journals showing that veggie teens

have better diets than omnivore teens. It was covered in many different

periodicals and papers, but the original study is in the Archives of

Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine 2002;156:431. That citation I got from

the Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter, which is published by Loma Linda

University and I highly recommend. Other sites you might try include

vegsource.com and veganoutreach.

Let me know if you need more info,

Leena

The Physician's Committee For Responsible Medicine (www.pcrm.org) is a group

of medical professionals that promote veg*nism. you could use their info

but neglect to mention their cause. I don't think they put their mission on

every publication.

You can also go to PCRM or Vegan Outreach and look at

their sources. The sources are pretty easy to search

for on the internet so you can quote and read the

exact study (or a subset of the study). Or you might

find the studies through a local college. This is a

good idea anyway since people can quote different

findings from studies and not give the whole picture.

There are also some veg-friendly popular medical

doctors who are not completely veg or part of the AR

movement that you could quote (Dr. Weil, Dr.

Northrup). The nice thing about Vegan Outreach's

literature is that they are very 'even handed' about

the pros and cons of diet and they don'y say a vegan

diet is always healthier (sometimes it isn't...you

could eat vegan cookies all day LOL).

Good luck,

Linda
